My 79yr old neighbor almost didn't make it last August. His AC had been broken for 6 weeks. He didn't wanna "bother" anyone.
Mr. K has lived next door to me for 4 years. Retired, lives alone, widower. Real quiet guy. Waves every morning.
Last August I notice his windows are all open during a heat advisory. I'm a tech, something feels off. I knock on his door.
Guy is sitting in his recliner in a house that's probably 91°F. Got a little box fan pointed at his face. Tells me his AC "stopped working a while back" but he didn't wanna make a fuss. Didn't wanna call his daughter and worry her. Didn't wanna spend the money without knowing if it was serious.
His hands were shaking. He wasn't sweating anymore which if u know anything about heat illness - that's the part that scares u.
I called his daughter. Then I fixed his unit (cracked contactor, $35 part). Then I sat with him till she arrived.
He was ok. But it was close.
