Question
I’m trying to figure out where I fit politically and would really appreciate some perspective.
I was a socialist for many years before becoming a Christian. I still strongly agree with a lot of socialist ideas, particularly economic equality, workers’ rights, solidarity, and caring for people who are struggling.
At the same time, my Christian beliefs have given me some more socially conservative convictions. I believe God created humanity as male and female, while also believing that LGBTQ people deserve dignity, equality, safety, and protection from discrimination.
I’m also personally opposed to abortion in most circumstances, although I don’t think the government should impose my religious beliefs on everyone else. I’d describe myself as personally pro-life but politically pro-choice, and I’d rather see fewer abortions through social support and helping families than through criminalization.
I’m wondering whether there’s room within socialism for someone who has relatively conservative theological views on some social questions.
I’m genuinely asking because I’m trying to understand where I fit, not trying to start an argument.
