Gun Dog–Japanese nu-metal band

Keeping the Japanese nu-metal series going with Gun Dog, a band from Yokohama that only existed long enough to put out one album and then vanished.

*Humanity* came out in 2003 and it's one of those records that makes you mad it isn't talked about more. Down-tuned riffs, massive choruses, some electronic elements mixed in — it sounds like it could've come out of the nu-metal revival scene of the last few years but it's been sitting there since 2003 largely undiscovered. The production is strong, every song is memorable, and the whole thing is over before you know it.

They disbanded shortly after and that's all she wrote. One album, gone. Which somehow makes it hit even harder knowing this is all we got from them.

If you've been following along with the Japanese nu-metal recommendations this one is not optional.

Uzumaki – Osaka nu-metal that's been going since 1996

Already posted Junkie Honey but let me keep the Japanese nu-metal train going because Uzumaki deserves just as much attention.

These guys formed in Osaka in 1996 and their 2001 major debut *Eliminator* is the one to hear. Dual vocalists, heavy riffs, industrial elements mixed in — it's a sound that feels uniquely Japanese but still hits everything you want from the genre. The album cover alone — six guys in all black surrounded by lightning — tells you exactly what kind of energy they're bringing.

They toured with Dragon Ash and have been active in various forms since the 90s so there's plenty to dig into beyond just this album.

If Junkie Honey was your intro to the Japanese nu-metal scene, Uzumaki is the next logical step.

Junkie Honey – Japanese nu-metal from 1999

Japanese nu-metal is its own world and Junkie Honey is one of the best kept secrets in it.

They formed in 1996 out of Japan and their 1999 mini-album *Suicide* is exactly what it looks like — aggressive, haunting, and hits hard. Five tracks that blend nu-metal with hardcore in a way that feels completely authentic to the era. The fact that they were doing this in Japan at the same time as the American scene was peaking makes it even more impressive.

The cover art alone should tell you everything — hand drawn stuffed bunny with a noose, very much not playing it safe. The music matches that energy.

If you've never gone down the Japanese nu-metal rabbit hole this is a solid place to start.

41 Down pre Trust Company

If you were around in 2002 and somehow missed Trust Company, that's a wrong that needs to be corrected immediately.

These guys started out as 41 Down out of Alabama, built a fanbase grinding through the Southeast, eventually signed to Geffen and dropped *The Lonely Position of Neutral*. "Downfall" got heavy MTV2 rotation and charted, they toured with Korn and Papa Roach, and the album went gold. By every measure they should have been massive.

The record still holds up. It's got that melodic heaviness that defined the best of the era — aggressive enough to scratch the itch but with hooks that actually stick. They're still out there as Trust Company so there's no excuse not to go check them out.

Start with "Downfall," "Hover," and "Running from Me." You'll be wondering why you slept on them. And if you're already a Trust Company fan, do yourself a favor and go back to the 41 Down era — it's worth hearing where they started and comparing it to what they eventually became.

Street Breed – nu-metal band out of Texas that actually sounds like they grew up on the same albums we did

Street Breed is a nu-metal band out of McAllen, Texas and they sound exactly like what this sub is about — heavy guitar riffs, thick bass grooves, and that old-school late 90s/early 2000s energy that a lot of newer bands try to fake but can't quite pull off.

They just put out a demo EP called *Exchange of Forces* earlier this year. Six tracks, 22 minutes, no filler. The cover art alone — a mech stomping through a post-apocalyptic wasteland — sets the tone perfectly. Spotify is already pairing them with acts like Stapled Shut and enemy of? which should tell you everything you need to know about where they're coming from sonically.

Still early days for these guys so now is a good time to get in.

Downer is one of those bands that should come up every time people talk about the roots of the genre but somehow never does.

Self-titled album is the one to hear. The sound sits right in that pocket between early Korn-era heaviness and Helmet-style groove — chunky riffs, raw production, no filler. Tracks like "Last Time," "Speed Teeth," and "Mud Bath" hit exactly the way you want them to. Even the cover art is certified 90s — dark, biomechanical, unsettling in the best way.

They never got the push they deserved and kind of disappeared into obscurity, which honestly makes them feel like a buried treasure. If you're the type who goes digging for the bands that influenced the bands you already love, Downer is worth your time.

Start with the self-titled. You'll wonder why nobody talks about them.

Hey r/militaryhistory,

I recently lost my grand uncle at the age of 98 and am trying to learn more about his military service. His obituary had a portrait of him in uniform and I'm hoping this community can help fill in some details.

Here's what I've already been able to piece together with help from r/military:

- He served during the **Korean War era**

- He was part of the **25th Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning)**

- The **blue aiguillette** on his collar indicates he was **Infantry**

- He is wearing an **enlisted dress cap** with no visible rank insignia, suggesting this was taken during or shortly after Basic Training

- His **DUI (shoulder pin)** may indicate the **35th Infantry Regiment**, possibly 1st or 2nd Battalion

I'll be posting both the **original photo** from his obituary and an **AI enhanced version** for a clearer view of the uniform details.

I'm specifically hoping someone can help confirm or expand on:

- His **regiment and battalion** based on the DUI

- Any other **unit-specific details** from his insignia

- Roughly **when** the photo was taken based on uniform details

This is a really meaningful piece of family history. Any help is appreciated!

Thank you 🎖️
