Im trying to get my remote to reconnect with this ancient treasure - where do I find the switches? Do I force this gray thing open?

I have this old system that stopped working last week, and I do not have the budget to buy new. I thought all I needed to do was replace batteries on the remote - still doesn’t work (tho indicator lights up so batteries are working). I do not know how to reconnect the two (is the Allister thing called the receiver?) and the user manuals in finding online do not help. The user manual for the remote says I should have a block of switches - I do not see this inside the remote, just a circuit board. The Allister thing is old and spidery and gross and I tried to remove the light cover and it crumbled in my hands 🤮 — I was trying to see if the Allister/receiver/opener (are these all the same thing?) had a switch board but I got the heebie jeebies and decided this was out of my league. First service guy I called was like “that’s old we have a new system for $600” and didn’t offer to come see it or problem solve. Bummer. Help me - what do I need to do first? None of the instructions online have given me any progress!! 😭💀 and $600 is NOT in the budget right now.
