I've always been a "jack of all trades" (or Jill I guess?). When I started in the annotation industry back in 2023, it was the wild west, and generalists could get work wherever. Obviously specialists and SMEs were important, but they weren't taking up the majority of annotators. There seems to be a trend towards specialists as the industry evolves.

If you're a generalist, have you struggled with getting work in the last year vs prior ones?

How do you intend to stay ahead of the curve?

Heya! We know REX is young platform, and there are a lot of growing pains it went through since September/October 2025. In response to that, there’s been a lot of improvement based on feedback. Personally, the speed annotators are paid has been super great to see. There used to be so many issues, and now it’s a smooth and almost completely automated process. What are some improvements you’ve noticed a an annotator? Or something you’d still like to see implemented?

I’m conducting this survey as part of my Bachelor’s (BBA) research project, focused on understanding the working conditions, job security, and burnout levels experienced by people working in the AI industry, specifically roles like data annotation, labelling, RLHF (reinforcement learning from human feedback), content moderation, and similar contractual AI-support work.
