Anyone plant sunflowers this late?

Just wondering how the shortening daylight affects them around here and also just love to hear others’ more general experiences growing sunflowers in New Orleans.

This is my first year getting them to grow, and I did a mixed packet, and I did a little succession planting of the procut variety in the early summer. The procuts are the pollen-free kind that are often used in bouquets- a one bloom and done plant. (I was a little let down by their short vase life!) Once I try a plant, it’s like I can never have enough background info about that plant, you know?

The river and alligators?

I took my kids to throw rocks and sticks in the river one evening. We’ve done this often over the years. A man came down to me asked/warned me that hadn’t I heard that an alligator had taken a child not too far from there, and that another child had fallen in after them. I told him no. I knew of the 2022 tragedy in Algiers in which a child slipped off a structure and it led to two other children also losing their lives. The man went onto say that he would hate to see something happen to my kids, and that alligators are particularly active in the summer.
This man has his basic facts wrong about what had happened, and that has bothered me all day. It seems disrespectful to the kids and their loved ones to be piling on invented details. It made me wonder if it was just this guy saying this, or if it had become some shared rumor at some point.

Still, I was left wondering if I am being too relaxed at the river’s edge—his comment struck a nerve bc I have feared gators and sharks forever! Yet I got over it enough by to eventually do a good number of ocean open water swims and have swum in Pontchartrain several times too. Always with some fear though, never quite at ease. So in Gretna at the amphitheater, the rocky-gravely slope is gradual, and after the rocks there’s the spanse of stickiest mud before the water. My kids aren’t going to accidentally fall into the water in this area, and I’m right there with them too. Is there real alligator risk there or is this guy doing too much? Also, I take my dog to play fetch behind a barge on the Algiers side. The water is calm there. But I have this lurking worry, like I hope there is nobody in there trying to fetch you, girl. I know the saying of if it’s water in Louisiana, there’s gators in it. Am I being too chill?

Help me, color people!

I have already bought my countertop, and I brought it to the store with me to compare it to floor choices and figure out my wall color. When I held my natural stone to some green tiles, it was like a halo appeared over this match made in heaven. I think the terracotta color looked great, too. Does this experience show me that the beige in my countertop has green undertones, and that therefore I should pursue beiges for my wall color that are said to have green undertones? Am I understanding undertones correctly? (I do not want to do green floor tile or walls, but we have a number of green accent pieces in the living room that shares the same open space.)

With perpendicular island seating, do you need a support post under your stone to accommodate the 1’ overhang?

Here is an example of what I’m asking. Is this structurally necessary or is it for style, or both? I see the support built in underneath and wondering if that’s enough or if I should plan for the post.

Cockscomb Cramers Rose Celosia

Would anyone care for some cramers rose seedlings? Located in Algiers. Flowers expected in fall, and they self seed, so I infer you don’t want to overdo it.

Too narrow a space for an island, but what to do with our new found open space?

We are gutting our kitchen, but cannot change window and door placement. We will remove the current peninsula, resulting in a long but narrow open space we have to decide how to manage. I just did this drawing on "Smart Draw" and am just doing my best in that dept.

Currently: Space between peninsula's end and the fridge is only 30". It drives me crazy to go around the peninsula to get to the back door or to wait for my partner, children, or dog to come thru the pass so I can proceed. We just took down a wall between the living room and kitchen. The space is only 9'6" wide, while the measure from the living room wood floor to the back kitchen wall is 16' so now feels long and narrow.

Looking forward: I am trying to figure out if I can do a peninsula and how/where. I've made peace with the fact that an island would be problematic because I'd have two narrow passways on either side. Is there a way to do a peninsula? Maybe make itshorter but deeper where the current peninsula sits, plusembrace a kitchen table? What would you do in front of this low window on the long wall?
