Do people still use excel for prototyping?

In the 2019-2021 era I worked as an independent technology consultant and a significant amount of my work boiled down to transforming excel models and systems into web apps or desktop apps.

In the era of vibe coding and replit/lovable/Base 44 app builders, do companies and institutions still use excel as a medium for prototyping?

10x smaller vector indexes in pgvector

I added the TurboQuant algorithm published by Google to pgvector as part of my discovery and learning process with RAG systems. Just this past weekend, I ran a test with the 100M row Wikipedia dataset from Cohere where I observed a 10x reduction in index size relative to HNSW. I figure with the direction RAM and storage prices have been going, we could use some more ways to save space!

Bosphorus

I’d been craving Turkish food for a while and after some searching through this subreddit, I found this place mentioned a couple of times. It’s kitty corner from Undici.

This place is a real treat if you’re looking for some good Turkish food or to try something new. We got a black tea, the orange tea, a sultan’s platter for two which includes the salad, pita, gyros, chicken, steak, and kefta, and we added on fries and some dolma.

My fiancée loved the gyros so much we ordered extra and it was a very reasonable $4.25 add on. This was a fantastic value and we had leftovers to bring home.
