I do tape now. A hands-off 3-day 40TB backup job on an LTO6 autoloader in progress and I love it.

I just finished migrating my UnRAID server over to a new dual Platinum 8268 Platinum setup with 12x32GB ECC.

My important array is 4x26GB drives with 52TB of useable space, the other arrays have a mix of 16GB/8GB drives and take up the other sleds in the Rosewill case.

I've been looking for a reliable backup solution just in case my arrays crapped the bed with the move to the new server but it was a non issue and they transferred over with no issues. UnRAID keeps surprising me.

Anyhow, I was looking through eBay, as these things usually start, and picked up a great condition Quantum Superloader3 with an LTO6 drive for less than $200. I scored 16 sealed tapes to fill left and right magazines for less than $200 and a SAS cable for $20.

I spun up Bareos on UnRAID and created a backup job for the 52TB array and it's been whirring away for the past few hours, it swaps tapes automatically and hasn't complained once. The barcode reader reads the labels I've created which was a slight ball ache to do but the autoloader knowing which tape is where is a simple but very satisfying thing.

That's 40TB of backups for less than $450 in case one or more of my drives decides to fail.

It's not fast, the first test backups restored perfectly and I'm stoked that it works. LTO7/8/9 would have been nice but this fits my needs amazingly well - if I need more backup storage I just buy new tapes. If you haven't looked into tape and were curious about it, it's well worth a look even at these lower capacities.
