EFA reg. season breakdown in a nutshell

EFA reg. season breakdown in a nutshell

In addition to the occasional statistic, which you’re already familiar with from EPFR, I also have tools that dig a little deeper, including one that compares the teams' performances against each other across various disciplines.

Based on that, I’ve put together a brief overview with a small selection of such metrics for you.

Ad success rate: A play counts as successful if it gains at least 40% of yards needed on 1st down, 60% on 2nd down, or converts the full distance on 3rd/4th down or vice versa for defense, of course.

It seems Foot Bowl is dead!

Opu recently posted:

Sorry, but unfortunately this has to be posted, with a heavy heart.

Dear Foot-Bowl Community,

Following Hendrik's decision about a week ago to sell parts of Foot Bowl, some of us felt blindsided. We were actually already in the middle of planning how Foot Bowl should move forward, but those plans were torpedoed by this decision. The whole situation proved to be the last straw for us.

As of today, we will no longer be producing any Newszones, and the Erdinger Brauhaus Webshow will also come to an end after today's edition.

Only Sebastian and Toni have decided to continue producing the GFL Webshow until the end of the season. We are sad that it had to come to this, but for us, the time has come to draw a line and move on.

But let this much be said: We are already planning new projects. So feel free to keep an eye on our profiles for updates.

Best regards, Arndt, Jan, Nils, Opu, and Sebastian

I tried to rate the EFA Offensive Lines

It's bye week, so for me that means messing around, with some data I have.

In football, there are statistics for everything, but the offensive line often remains shrouded in mystery. I've tried to evaluate the offensive lines of various teams.

Since the same formula is always applied to the same values of every team, I think a comparison is possible.

dem ratings! :D

ELI5

The O-Line Rating Index evaluates the performance of an offensive line by rewarding positive actions such as successful run blocks (measured by line yards, where runs over 3 yards are subject to a 50% deduction, and a hard cut or cap is applied starting at 8 yards, so that the remainder is attributed to the running back. As well as by the opportunity rate, the percentage of runs in which the O-Line pushes the opponent back far enough to gain at least four yards), while negative factors such as runs stopped in the backfield (Stuff Rate, the percentage of runs stopped at or behind the line of scrimmage), allowed quarterback sacks, and offensive penalties are heavily penalized.

These factors are used to calculate a total score per game, which is averaged over the season: While dominant top-tier units end up well in the positive range (up to over 20 points) and reliably sustain their offense’s rhythm, error-prone offensive lines with many allowed sacks and penalties plummet into the negative range.

This is how I would restructure the EFA HG areas!

We're taking some territories away from Germany and giving them to the Raiders (Baden-Württemberg) and the Lions (Eastern Germany, including Berlin). Germany simply has far too much talent for just two teams (or even four, if you included the AFLE teams).

The Raiders will lose Italy in return, since there will be a team there.

UK will get Ireland as a HG area, while the Nordics and France will remain as they are.

What do you think? Too radical? I like the idea, but it's just wishful thinking. Feel free to draw your own map, with the goal of making the league more balanced.

Ulz Däuber is now the future ex-GM of the Raiders Tirol.

The Raiders Tirol and GM Football, Ulz Däuber, have mutually agreed to part ways at the end of the current EFA season. Ulz will continue to oversee organizational and administrative duties until the end of the season, while Head Coach Shuan Fatah will take over sole responsibility for future recruiting and scouting.

Why EPFR Stats Differ from Official Stats

Lately, I've been asked more and more often why our stats sometimes differ drastically from the official ones, and I wanted to try and explain it here!

How EPFR collects stats

We have an editor where we enter each play individually after reviewing it. Here's a picture of the editor.

EPFR Match Editor

We strictly adhere to the NFL guidelines when interpreting the rules and, in statistical matters, generally follow the NFL Guide for Statisticians.

Why there are differences

General

At the beginning of the season, we had a different process. The league's play-by-plays were available, and we simply corrected them. Recently, these play-by-plays are no longer available, which forced us to take action. We needed a new editor (see above) to statistically record games from scratch. These had to remain compatible with the old stats, of course, and that works!

Defense

Because of the system change, we can only start statistically from where we left off. Initially, assists on tackles weren't recorded, but now the league apparently counts them. With our small team, we can't rewatch and correct many games retroactively, so we've stuck with the first mode. Many tackles are also attributed to the team as team tackles, since the camera angles often don't allow for clear identification of the player involved.

Therefore, this is where the biggest discrepancies/gaps occur.

Offense

Here, we're usually quite close. Differences arise because we don't rely on on-screen indicators or the down marker, but instead use the line of scrimmage sorted by where the down judge is located. This inevitably leads to discrepancies, but it's the cleanest method.

More

Furthermore, there are also plays that are simply incorrectly declared in the official gamebooks; an example is attached.

https://preview.redd.it/79wv3s8wzcdh1.png?width=623&format=png&auto=webp&s=d0f73e0aee1edf746d7ea405055ce53ad08f2742

So in this play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyHWf8d1eW4&t=7535s the league counts it as a running play, but it's a pass for sure, so our play looks like this:

EPFR play

Also check where the down judge is placed after the play, and what the onscreen info says.

These are minor things, but of course they accumulate over the course of a season!

Humans

However, despite all the technology, systems, etc., this isn't a complaint against anyone, like fans, players, or coaches. The people who deal with stats at the league, the teams, or EPFR are simply human and can make mistakes.

If we're made aware of them, we can investigate. The best way to do this is to join our Discord server so we can chat about it! Discord: https://discord.gg/PBu9Mw45DS
