Andrew Jackson died 181 years ago today
His last words were said to be "I hope to meet each of you in heaven. Be good, children, all of you, and strive to be ready when the change comes." He died in 1845 at the ripe age of 78 at his home The Hermitage, in Nashville. Surrounded by family and several of his slaves.
Interesting final words for a man with such a stained and polarizing legacy.
Could James Monroe leaking The Jay Treaty to the French be considered treasonous?
While appointed Minister to France during Washington's second term, he was accused of leaking terms of the Jay Treaty to French Authorities. He was then fired from his position by Washington after this was discovered. Monroe was a staunch anti federalist and hated any negotiations with the British. I was surprised and disappointed to learn this about Monroe.
Jackson was the sole senator from the recently admitted state of Tennessee at the time. He was outraged at Washington's signing of The Jay Treaty and refused to stand and salute along with the rest of congress.
