Can OPNsense tell me how much ISP bandwidth my household using?

I'm wondering how close I am to saturating my 1 gig Fios plan. I know there are reports within OPNsense but I'm not really sure how to use them. Is there a way I can see things like average bandwidth and bandwidth spikes?

Are any Proxmox updates safe to automate?

I'm relatively new to Proxmox. I'm using unattended-upgrades for Debian security updates.

It seems like there are Debian/Proxmox package updates available several times a week, if not almost daily. I'm more used to Home Assistant and OPNsense which update much less frequently and have clearer release notes. And an easier rollback path.

I would really like to automate as much as I can, while still remaining "safe". Are there any Proxmox origin updates that I can include? And any Debian updates other than security?

High latency alerts - What does this mean?

I've been using OPNsense with no issues for close to a year. Starting this week, I began receiving this Monit email alert once or twice a day:

>WAN_GW has high latency, removing from routing group WAN
Gateways status could not be determined, considering all as up/active.

It seems to be very temporary because I receive a success email a minute later. Outside of the alert, I have not experienced any noticeable problems. What does this alert mean? How can I investigate the cause and what can I do to fix it?

Block foreign countries - Except if it is me connecting remotely on my VPN?

I have a firewall rule that blocks any incoming requests from countries outside of the US. We are going on a cruise soon, and I want to be able to access my network from the ship and ports.

I know the easiest thing to do would be to temporarily disable the rule. But I am wondering - How can I create an exception or new rule that will allow in my Wireguard VPN connection while still blocking any other incoming WAN requests from other counties?

UniFi OS Server not picking up host names from OPNSense

I posted this the other day in the Ubiquiti subreddit, but didn't have much luck there. Maybe the OPNSense subreddit makes more sense...

I have an OPNSense router and just started running UniFi OS Server in Proxmox for my new and growing UniFi network. I added a UniFi Pro XG 10 switch as the first node in my network, immediately after the OPNSense box. Everything else is plugged in to the Pro XG 10. It is working and I can see all of the devices on the network in the UniFi UI. However, it looks like it is picking up the default device names rather than using the host names I have configured in Dnsmasq in OPNSense.

I have these checked in Unbound:

  • Register ISC DHCP4 Leases
  • Register DHCP Static Mappings

And the correct host names do show up in AdGuard Home, which is my DNS server.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the host names to show up in UniFi OS Server? What other information can I provide to help?

Thanks in advance!

Today is a big day! I started my UniFi journey with the purchase of a Pro XG 10 PoE. Still to come - Several Flex 2.5G PoE switches and UniFi APs.

But I will not be adding a UniFi Gateway. Instead I am going to keep my OPNSense router and run UniFi OS Server in Proxmox.

Which brings me to my issue. I added the Pro XG 10 switch as the first node in my network, immediately after the OPNSense box. Everything else is plugged in to the Pro XG 10. It is working and I can see all of the devices on the network. However, it looks like it is picking up the default device names rather than using the host names I have configured in Dnsmasq in OPNSense.

I have these checked in Unbound:

And the correct host names do show up in AdGuard Home, which is my DNS server.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can get the host names to show up in UniFi OS Server? What other information can I provide to help?

Thanks in advance!
