Seeking medical social work
Hey all,
I’m a recent MSW graduate awaiting licensure (already passed, yay!). I had a very disheartening journey during my clinical placement at a group practice. My supervisors thought I was not a good fit to be a therapist and after making it my lifelong dream, it was incredibly disappointing. I learned that I was given a very difficult case for an intern to handle that was eventually referred out of the practice, but it’s difficult for me to even consider doing therapy.
Unfortunately, this placement would not be a good professional reference for me. I have two other supervisors from other experiences, but typically most interviewers ask for three.
I’ve always been in healthcare oriented fields but nothing like a hospital or dialysis, which many social workers work in. I also want the PSLF benefits of working for a hospital, so my goal is to end up as a hospital social worker. However I’m finding it hard to get any responses back to applications for nursing homes, long term care centers, hospitals, etc. I’m seeking feedback on how to improve my resume or where I could look to build my career in medical social work. I would eventually like to return back to doing therapy, but for now, I want to try and get into hospital social work.
TL;DR - seeking support as someone who had a bad experience providing one-on-one therapy as a new social worker and may want to return to that field, and seeking professional support in finding a job in hospital/medical support for the time being
