Mutiny (2026) Jason Statham's new movie is f**king awesome

Mutiny (2026) Jason Statham's new movie is f**king awesome

Narratively Mutiny is almost exactly the same as most Jason Statham movies. He's ex-military now kicking ass and taking names for a living on behalf of some billionaire. So I kinda expected just a middle of the road somewhat enjoyable time at the cinema. But despite some flaws, Mutiny is comfortably the best Statham movie in years. The action truly rips and he actually wants to be here rather than phoning it in. Such a fun surprise. Anyone watching this weekend?

The End of Oak Street (2026) the best dinosaur movie in decades

After the debacle of the AI dog podcast, my expectations for The End of Oak Street were fairly low, I was wrong. Now I know it's not really a high bar given the dinosaur movies we've had recently, but The End of Oak Street is comfortably the best in decades. It's absolutely bonkers, contains some of the most outrageous scenes you'll see this year, and by no means perfect, yet it's still a ridiculously fun time. Anyone planning to see it this weekend?

One Night Only (2026) The Purge but for sex?

One Night Only's premise is exactly like The Purge but for sex, one night a year pre-marital relationships are legal. I did expect there to be some background as to how we got to that stage, but aside from some satirical political jibes, you're asked to just suspend all belief and go with it. As a romcom it's a mixed bag though. First half is distinctly weaker, but when Callum Turner and Monica Barbaro finally share the screen it's a really fun time. That may be a surprise to most given the terrible marketing, but well worth the watch. Anyone planning to go this weekend? Saw AMC were doing "single only screenings" which is very weird....

Soulm8te (2026) the M3GAN spin off nobody asked for

Feel like I might be one of the only ones on the planet to have actually watched Soulm8te, which is not surprising given the $20 price tag (thankfully I got sent a code). Surprisingly though, it's not awful. Don't get me wrong it's not great by any stretch of the imagination and is just an inferior copycat of Companion from last year, but I did expect it to be a worst of the year contender given it was completely pulled from any sort of theatrical release. Did anyone else bother watching it?

The Devil's Mouth (2026) Prime Video's new shark movie

Straight-to-streaming shark movies have become a lot more frequently recently and the one thing they all share in common is you want the shark to win. That's the same with Prime Video's attempt The Devil's Mouth that has the most insufferable friendship group I've come across in a long time. Sadly, the movie itself is as generic as it comes, the shark as you can see above, looks terrible, and the acting is atrocious. Having looked at other reviews I feel I may be in the minority in how bad I though this was, so has anyone else seen it yet? What was your thoughts?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) A rollercoaster worth boarding

True to recent Marvel form, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is far from perfect but it is a huge leap in the right direction. Powered along by the best performance Tom Holland has ever given in the role whilst taking a much darker approach with it's focus on grief and loss, it feels much more "grown up". Still has the typical overuse of humour and at times dodgy visual effects, but the hand-to-hand combat is a real highlight! Definitely a solid addition to the Holland Spider-Man filmography without ever troubling the best the franchise has to offer. Whose braving the crowds to go see it opening weekend?

The Odyssey (2026) Nolan has done it again. A technical feat like no other.

Straight to the point, I don't think The Odyssey is perfect. The pacing especially will be a huge issue for general audiences and I can see a few not making it through the whole thing. One thing is for sure though, Christopher Nolan has created a technical masterpiece. It's scarcely believable that a film like this was even made with it's use of practical effects and set pieces. The performances across the board, whether actors are in it for 5 minutes or 172, are all brilliant. It's more of a cinematic event than just another movie, and while I personally don't think it's Nolan's best, it's very close.

Evil Dead Burn (2026) another bloody good time

Putting different director's at the helm of the Evil Dead franchise is always fun, because despite the fairly formulaic storyline, Evil Dead Burn feels unique. Packed to the brim with some of the most gruesome and cringe inducing scenes of all the movies, it's fair to say most will wince in their seats. Great camera work, slick editing, and insane make-up help make Evil Dead Burn a really fun time. Sure it's not perfect. The characters are annoying for large portions and make some braindead decisions, but as a fan of the franchise, it didn't stop me having a real good time. Anyone planning to go see it this weekend?

Young Washington (2026) The most outrageous use of Gen-AI to date

It's my first 4th July in America, so I thought I'd get into the festivities early by catching Young Washington, but now I have a severe case of humbug. The story, acting, and just about everything else is slightly below average, but my goodness whoever is in charge of the generative AI for the action has had a nightmare. From literally the opening battle scene it's so blatantly apparent that any sort of immersion is completely lost. We all know it's going to become a routine thing in movies, but surely it has to be done better than this. Anyone else seen it yet?

Citizen Vigilante (2026) The worst movie of all time?

I know "the worst movie of all time" gets banded around way too often, but Citizen Vigilante might genuinely be a contender. Coming from Uwe Boll, whose own Wikipedia page describes him as one of the worst directors of all time, this is a 90 minute call to violence for Europeans against migrants disguised as a "movie". I'm astounded this has been made and Armie Hammer's "comeback" is over before it even began. I'm hoping someone else has seen this?

Disclosure Day (2026) another jewel in Spielberg's crown

While Disclosure Day doesn't ever really threaten to reach the insane highs of some of Spielberg's classics, it is another jewel in his already illustrious crown. Powered by a career best performance from Emily Blunt and a brilliant score by John Williams, it's a thought provoking sci-fi thriller that's surprisingly emotional and a fantastic time at the cinema.

Surprisingly, I've not seen the usual anticipation for a Spielberg film with this, so is anyone here planning to see it opening weekend?

Scary Movie (2026) Am I too old and woke?

Growing up the original Scary Movie and even Scary Movie 2 were hilarious to me. Clever parodies that served a purpose, but the new Scary Movie, even with the return of the Wayans brothers, I found for the most part painfully unfunny. It made me think am I too old and "woke" to find these movies funny anymore? What's everyone else's thoughts for those that have seen it?

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026) An underwhelming return

As you'll hear and read thousands of times over the coming days, this is just episodes of the show smushed together and called a feature length movie. It's undeniably entertaining in parts with an electric score to boot, but as a huge fan of Star Wars, I can't help feeling like there should've been more to it, especially after a near 7 year wait. Anyone else seen it yet/planning to this weekend?

Saw Mortal Kombat II last night and admittedly, expectations weren't high with the delays and not really enjoying the first movie, but I have to say, despite obvious flaws, it's such a fun time. Action sequences are amped up, there's an actual tournament this time round, and Karl Urban as Johnny Cage is brilliant. As video game adaptations go, it's probably as good as you get. Anyone watching this weekend?

Saw Andy Serkis' Animal Farm last night and I can't for the life of me remember an adaptation that has missed the mark as much as this. Whether it's the script or directing that's to blame, it fails to understand the source material it's based on making it a painful experience. Please tell me I'm not alone in seeing this?

The Sheep Detectives is a family friendly version of Knives Out filled to the brim with the same over murder mystery quirks while maintaining the fun. It's hard for family movies to not come across as pandering with their messaging, but The Sheep Detectives navigates some hard hitting themes really well. Definitely one I'd recommend.
