Understanding + memorizing dilemma

Currently in my preclinical years studying different systems and using anking step 1 deck very consistently as one of my main if not the main source of studying but i have this fear that im not understanding all the concepts at a deep level, or im leaning more towards big picture and going through my cards but i dont always take the time to read all the extra sections, look at the tables and diagrams or even look something up when i feel i should i just move on trying to cover my dues and do some new material

Is this ok or should i change my approach. my primary goal is #1 be sharp and knowledgeable and make good use of my pre clinical years so that when its time to take step 1 im confident and 2 for when clinical rotations come around im in a good spot

Im browsing through the posts on here and every post has some fire tips in the comments. Kinda made me think i can be getting so much more out of anking (its my primary resource like i genuinely enjoy studying it) anyone got any tips to make sure i got the correct settings, and approach so that i dont realize i was using it wrong or inefficiently in a year or 2
