I’m just curious about how effective putting the show on Netflix was for people finding it, so I hope you guys will indulge me a bit here. Where did you start watching the show?
And just to be clear, this is about the first two seasons of IWTV, but I’m counting that and TVL as the same show.
I thought this was a good (not like great or perfect, but good) video essay. The religious themes of Sinners struck me hard when I saw it the first time. I left the theater asking my bestie if they thought the film was an objective rejection of Christianity and the Black church. The fact that Sammie actively rejects his father’s religion and walks away from the church to choose his music, the music that had more power to help save him than the Lord's Prayer did, was a very powerful decision that I couldn’t help but to read as a direct rejection of that religion.
On top of that, you see throughout the film that Annie’s Root practice has way more power and offers way more protection, knowledge and connection to the ancestors than any example of Christianity in the film. It all seems to come together into an active rebuke of what we’ve been told about Christianity this whole time.
But I’m curious to hear what you all thought about those themes as well. And what you think about this video and the points the young brother is making in it.
