Which is the most Canon-Railroaded of Harry's years at Hogwarts in fics?
I am currently exasperated reading yet another 7 year fic where Harry gets outed as a parselmouth at the duelling club (this time he's a Hufflepuff)- because some rando Hufflepuff guy he has no beef with cast Serpensortia at him even though there's no reason whatsoever for him to have done so, and it inevitably hones in on Justin Finch-Fletchley.
I've even read fics with mentor Snape and also Harry himself knowing Harry is a parselmouth, warning him to conceal it, and him still exposing himself at the duelling club rather than just let Snape deal with the snake. On top of this, the same petrifications playing out in the same way, with Harry always being caught at the scene of the crime every time (which was bad enough in the original book, let alone when there's a more intelligent Harry who should know better than to stand there gawking over Justin Finch Fletchley's petrified body).
Oh and he also will never tell Dumbledore that he can hear a voice in the walls, even if he and Dumbles have a very good relationship with each other.
This got me to thinking, is there any worse year than 2nd for being Railroaded by fanfic authors to copy canon? At least Tri-Wizard tournaments often have unique spins on the tasks, or Sirius gets free or exonerated early a lot of the time, and fanon Harry's often don't simply lay down and take Umbridge's crap for the whole year.
I feel like after first year where you have the introduction of whatever the premise of any given fic is, Year 2 most often derails my interest in so many fics for this reason.
It feels like the Chamber plot gets the least amount of original takes on it throughout the fandom.
