Just watched All My Friends Hate Me (2021), have a couple questions
Spoilers ahead.
This is a film that explores aging millennial friend dynamics (just a prank bro) from the perspective of an insecure, anxious, self-conscious 31-year old guy who used to be “the life of the party” back in uni.
It becomes clear that his belief that his friends are conspiring against them is just a paranoid delusion when it’s revealed that Harry isn’t just some rando his friends met at the pub, but is actually part of their old uni friend group.
But to me, this isn’t one of those films where you can look back and see that the protagonist just misinterpreted everything. There’s two main things that stand out.
One of the friends explained Harry being there by them having a “wildcard” tradition of finding a rando to participate in their friend reunions. Why would she have said that if Harry was part of the ol’ gang?
Why was Harry taking notes on the protagonist about his “weak spots” and private intimate history?
Was this an “unreliable narrator” type deal where the viewer sees the protagonist’s hallucinations?
I honestly thought Harry would turn out to be like a Tyler Durden alter ego before the big reveal.
I welcome all thoughts from anyone who has seen this movie.
