Unlearning Whiteness – Lessons from PSY 425 Students

>Many white people do not understand the ways in which they adhere to socially constructed norms, ideologies, protocols, and beliefs that support systemic racism. These beliefs, world views, and habits of mind can be understood as “whiteness” – the mechanisms that uphold the longstanding oppression of people of color. Whiteness and the ignorance of it creates unequal, distinct understandings of reality. Our seminar taught us that oppression of Black, Indigenous, and other people of color may be rooted in history, but continues today in very real and horrific ways. We believe that the more people understand the truth about race in the U.S., the more they will want to fight against racism.
