Regarding Used Steed Salesman Card Dispute
Hey everyone! Hosted a game and there was an interesting turn of events. A player drew this Used Steed Salesman from the door deck. Their turn went as follows:
- They did not read the entirety of this card out loud when they drew it. (Normally we just say the level and bad stuff, we've played a lot and know most of the interactions.)
- After a moment, they said "I think I can beat this," opening the rest of the table up to counter-play, etc.
- Another player added a +10 Monster Enhancer card. This made it out-level the player.
- Afterwards, the combatant instead decided they will choose not to fight the Used Steed Salesman, and instead follow the directions written on the card.
- They went through the discards, found no Steeds, and did not pay 3 cards.
- They then discarded the monster, returned the Monster Enhancer to who played it, and continued their turn.
Arguments were had over several points on this card. The first being:
- Going through the discards and finding no Steed does not fulfill the requirements to discard this monster. Does the player who drew this Monster have to pay the 3 cards for the Steed even if they do not find one?
The second argument was:
- I assumed they were fighting the Monster, although they did not explicitly say so. Given that another player used a Monster Enhancer, I would interpret this player as in combat. If that is the case, would this card allow you to THEN choose not to fight it as it reads? I would really like to hear your opinions and interpretations of this card.
I personally think that since the player who drew this card didn't read it in its entirety at the beginning, they essentially cheated this turn. If they had read the paragraph, someone could have explicitly asked if they were fighting it, which may have avoided this whole thing.
Now that I'm posting this, I'm beginning to wonder what "If you choose not to fight" actually means. Does it just void the combat altogether? Or does it mean you need to run away? Is there such a thing as "not fighting?"
I know it's a long one, thanks in advance!
