(Boston, MA) Crying baby next door, no sound proofing… what do I do

Hi folks so I want immediately clarify that this is not the fault of the people who moved in next door. Families have every right to an apartment and babies cry, it’s what they do.

I have a very small bedroom in a duplex building with very thin walls — as in I can hear my neighbor’s conversations word for word, the dialogue in any tv show they put on. It’s always been a little bothersome but overall I considered it the simple price of living among others. However, a few days ago, a family of four moved into the unit with two little ones. They are not doing anything out of the ordinary or rude whatsoever but due to the complete lack of soundproofing, I’ve been woken up every morning since to the sound of the baby crying and the grumpy dad cursing and huffing about it. It’s constant on and off, making it difficult to relax in my room at all.

Our landlord had us renew our lease in February if we wanted to stay, with an October expiration date and raised our rent $50. So I just locked in until October 2027 for a higher rate of rent in a room I’m now struggling to sleep or relax in…

I don’t want to bother the family next door. Babies cry! But wtf do I do??
