Help me figure out what to do about my insertional achilles tendon pain
I posted this and then got nervous and deleted it. I am feeling brave so I am gonna leave it this time. Please ignore any spelling or grammar mistakes.
I’m gonna try and keep this vague while also providing any of the specifics I think I may need to.
I, a 25 y/o female who has had some form of foot/toe issues all their life, needs advice on what doctors to go to and how to get in touch with them.
I wore molds in my shoes for my toes when I was younger. Got surgery at 14 to fix it. Started having issues with heels at 18. Blisters and eventually bleeding in all kinds of shoes. I was told it was probably a bone spur (I now know the name is Haglund's deformity from my own research). Not much helped.
At 23, I got surgery on my right heel then my left (six months later) to fix it. I went to what I thought was a reputable place. They gave me no post operative physical therapy or weight bearing restrictions, something I asked about multiple times in pre operative visits. I was in the gown on the bed by the time the surgeon said to have a knee scooter for the beginning of post operative care. I used one for a little under a week. I saw the doctor two weeks after both operations.
At 24, I had fallen twice from my heel giving out from having pain. I reluctantly went to an orthopedic recommendation from my PCP. The nurses and doctors acted appalled by my previous care. The nurse’s jaw dropped and I couldn’t help but feel embarrassed for not knowing any better. They sent me to 8 weeks of physical therapy which did almost nothing. After going back to the orthopedic, they gave me an MRI. The nurse told me the doctor said it showed tendinosis. At my next visit he suggested surgery again, he said it might not fix the problem and if that was the case he would want me to have another surgery.
After that, I started researching on my own. I learned about Haglund’s deformity, what the calcaneus bone is, etc. I didn’t go through with any more medical care because at that point I didn’t have a solid solution or diagnosis. No one ever explained what “tendinosis” meant and I had to figure it out on my own. The pain has gradually gotten worse and acts up when I am too "active" or use my foot in certain ways. I had to go half a shoe size up after the surgeries because the pressure of my old shoes caused so much pain within just an hour. At the end of bad days, there isn't a lot that relieves the pain, and I have to let it go away on its own. I'm pretty sure I have gotten used to the day to day pain. Now I just notice when it gets particularly bad. I'm 25 so I don't think I should be limping or stumbling at the end of half of my days.
Now, I have a self referral typed up with a simple but detailed history of the story. I have my records from the doctor’s office that did the surgery and all the imaging from the orthopedic. I am hoping to find someone I can send it to, who can say “I might know what this is” or “I have seen this before”. That way I can schedule a visit and get some answers. Unfortunately, I don’t trust many doctors in my local area after everything that has happened. I want to go to someone who knows what they are doing, but I can’t just go around visiting doctors all over. I don’t know what to do.
