What makes Tufts unique? (questions from a prospective student)

Hi all! I'm a rising senior interested in applying to Tufts this fall, and I'm hoping to get a better sense of if Tufts is actually a good fit for me. I'm planning on studying bioengineering (cell and bioprocess track; not pre-med but may attend grad school).

When I toured MIT, the admissions officer said something along the lines of, "if you're not interested in humanities, don't come here. If you're not interested in collaboration, don't come here. If you're not interested in hands-on learning, don't come here" (then went on to explain how these connect to their motto and various policies). Definitive, specific statements like these are super helpful when deciding if a university is a good fit for me. Their what we look for page contains many additional examples.

When I toured Tufts, the admissions officer defined Tufts as a "private midsize liberal arts R1 research university near Boston" and described its focus on global impact, but didn't go into more detail about who should (or shouldn't) come to Tufts and what makes Tufts truly unique. I haven't been able to find much on the website, either.

I'm applying to lots of medium-sized (or medium-large) research universities in or near urban areas, many of which tend to have very similar "about us" statements on their websites. In order to differentiate these universities from one another, I find it helpful to try to figure out each school's specialty (e.g. Columbia's integration with NYC; USC's "engineering +" program; Northeastern's experiential learning and co-op program; Stanford's entrepreneurial culture and extremely flexible curriculum).

That said, I have a few questions that I'm hoping will help me figure out if Tufts is a good choice for me:

  1. How would y'all describe Tuft's specialty? (this could be one idea or a combination of qualities)
  2. Who should or shouldn't come to Tufts?
  3. Why did you decide that Tufts was the place for you, and how did it live up to your expectations?

Thank you so much in advance!!

Edit: adjusted my phrasing and questions for clarity
