The rest of yesterday's pickups

OK - so I picked up fewer than I remembered. I put a few things back before hitting the register.

So, the Hicks is spinning. I have to assume there's a flaw somewhere across the 4 sides to explain the $3 price. We'll see.

For the Joe and Hutcherson, I burned some trade credit at BLK.

I don't know Ricky, so that's another take a chance on a cheap Muse in great shape play.

Yeah, MPB-4 comp probably doesn't belong. As usual, my kid told me they've already discovered them, so I'm behind the curve.

The Hamp appears to be a postmortem reissue of material originally on Vault. Disc 2 did not impress me. Hamp slathered in syrupy strings? No thanks. I did a needle drop on Disc 1, and that was much more acceptable.

Scorpio and '78's

I grabbed about 10 discs today, pulling generously from Breakaway's $3 bin. Separately, I had to pinch myself when I broke down and bought a Scorpio reissue - this Bill English which I've never seen nor heard. It's an enjoyable spin, and I'll have to add a legitimate copy to my wishlist.

Also, a gent on our local Audiophiles FB list who was once an audio distributor cleaned out his garage this weekend and was just giving stuff away. I grabbed this NOT audiophile Thorens TD180 for 78 playback exclusively. I popped the bottom, found out why it wasn't working and got it up and running. I have about 40 78's and most aren't in great shape. I never felt it was worth buying a table for them, but free is free.

Fun with collection data and Copilot, redux

I'm finally starting to get the hang of using Copilot from within Excel to clean exported data and to guide the Copilot chatbot from within Excel, rather than trying to make the standalone chat do the work. I still have a lot of missing data values to populate, but now I have an incentive to keep moving.

Cheap Date - Red Mitchell Quartet - 1981 RE

I popped into Love Wheel and emerged $6.00 poorer. I'll probably look for an OG at some point, but this pre-Fantasy, pre-OJC reissue sounds just fine.

Really interesting line-up here. There aren't a lot of recordings of Lorraine Geller or James Clay, so this '57 title is a treat for those two alone. Add early Billy Higgins, and you may take a second look.

Then, of course, there's the kitten....

Got another box

See, it's a box!

Seriously, new $100 box arrived today from Beautiful World/philadelphiamusic. While I haven't cleaned and spun yet, first glance leads me to believe some serious undergrading of the vinyl took place with this shipment. My orders have been mixed over time, with some orders being graded exactly as described and most orders being in better condition.

This batch features two discs in blue vinyl - the Scott and the Thad. The Dorham is the Xanadu reissue of the disc on Jaro. Excepting the Dorham, the jazz discs are OG.

No, Sam Phillips (not the he, but the she) isn't jazz. But I couldn't pass up the novelty of a test pressing of "Fan Dance."

A placeholder and a player

1st stereo pressing in rough shape - both cover and disc. Before anyone jumps on me for wasting my money (mine to waste), the price was below lowest Discogs price. It's a tough listen, but doable.

The Kenny is VG++, on the other hand. I'm always looking for Thad Jones in a small group setting, so this was a no brainer for $8.00.

$3 bin rescue - The Guitar Session

Pretty close to what I expected. A bit on the "arranged" side for 1981, but solid side players and some guitarists who are new to me.

Dusty, no inner sleeve, but no visible marks. Small bit of edge warp is not problem for my linear tracking table. I'll give it over to the ultrasonic later.

Happy Fathers' Day!

Delivery Day

My latest $100 contribution to Beautiful World (philadelphiamusic).

Bill Hardman and Ernie are Japanese pressings. The rest are originals, VG+ or better.

I economized on the Fuller - VG/VG.

Time to fire up the HumminGuru and then get spinning.

A couple of additions

Pepper/Redd has been on my list for a while. Snagged this VG-/G+ copy off eBay for under $30. If you find a clean copy, grab it. Only 6 cuts with a short play time, but delicious stuff.

The Draper I've passed over several times at BLK. Broke down and picked it up today during a 20% off sale. It's probably more collectible than an enjoyable listen, but still happy to add the Draper/Coltrane combo to the shelves.

Today's Pulls

My purchases have slowed a bit. I had some declines on "Make An Offer" bids to Beautiful World/philadelphiamusic, and eBay watchlist hasn't pulled much that excites me.

So, today I drove down to End of An Ear to see if anything had built up in the bins. I was surprised to find some reasonably priced discs for my trouble.

The Geller discs will be upgrades to my existing copies. I've never owned that Hank, and it's a very clean OG with documented misprint features. I almost never see the Hall Overton, so now I have both volumes of the Jazz Laboratory series: Gryce and Overton. The Schuler replaces a beat up copy I purged a few months ago.

A link posted to Organissmo Forums a while back took me to the UNT archives, where I've slowly been making my way through interviews and oral histories, as well as some old program series from Billy Taylor and Willis Conover, among others.

I've populated the search with Horace Silver's name, but just search for your artist of interest.

Sometimes you just get a hit on a passing mention of an artist (from transcripts). But I really enjoy listening to folks tell their stories, and to hear their voices and speech patterns.

Since I run an outdated Android phone (LG V60) I guess I didn't get the "new" version of the Discogs app until a couple of weeks ago. When I checked Discogs forum, unsurprisingly, most of the feedback was negative (happy users rarely provide feedback). I tried to adapt for a bit, but I guess I'lI just fall back to using mobile browser when I'm digging.

How are you all adapting so far?

A couple of very clean $3 Muse releases in the bins at Breakaway today caught my eye. I can afford to take chances on artists I don't know at these prices. The Barron promo is sleeveless.
