Instead of Dumbledore and the Weasleys manipulating Harry into liking them for the greater good, they manipulate him into NOT liking them for the greater good.
“He accused me of being ‘Dumbledore’s man through and through.’”
“How very rude of him.”
“I told him I was.”
Dumbledore opened his mouth to speak and then closed it again. Behind Harry, Fawkes the phoenix let out a low, soft, musical cry. To Harry’s intense embarrassment, he suddenly realized that Dumbledore’s bright blue eyes looked rather angry, and stared hastily at his own knees. When Dumbledore spoke, however, his voice was quite steady. “I am very touched, Harry,” he said. But he didn’t look happy.
When Harry left his office, Dumbledore called Ron over. “Good evening, Mr. Weasley. Lemon drop? I hear your family is very good at manipulating people.”
“Yes, professor Dumbledore. My sister Ginny is so worried that Harry is going to fall in love with her and she doesn’t think she’s worthy of it, so if it happens she plans to lie to him that she used a Love Potion on him so that he won’t want to talk to her anymore. And back when Harry was about to start his first year at Hogwarts, my mom didn’t want the family to befriend him cause she thought he deserved better friends than poor people like us, so she pretended to not know what the platform number is in the hopes that Harry would think she’s stupid and not talk to her. But it didn’t work since Harry didn’t know how to get on the platform, so it backfired horribly and caused him to befriend us.”
“Very clever, Ron. That makes you perfect for an assignment I’d like to give you. Harry told me earlier today that he was really loyal to me, and I’m worried that won’t end well because I’m going to die at the end of the school year and send Harry and you and Miss Granger out hunting Voldemort’s Horcruxes by yourself. With how much he likes me he’s probably going to waste a lot of time mourning me when I die, and also will be too unconfident in himself to think about how to find Horcruxes without me there. So in order to ensure that doesn’t happen and Harry lets go of his love for me for the greater good, I need you and Miss Granger to convince Harry that I’m actually a manipulative asshole who left him with the Dursleys for no good reason, stole money from his vault, caused Voldemort’s turn to evil, and more malicious stuff like that. That way, he won’t like me anymore and won’t be distracted from his destiny by his attachment to me.”
“That sounds great Professor, but I do have a request. Once me and Hermione are done bashing you and manipulating Harry to hate you, do you mind it if I manipulate him into hating me too? After how badly I treated him when his name came out of the Goblet of Fire, I’m worried that I might do something wrong and desert him on this Horcrux hunt you want him to do, and Harry deserves a better friend to accompany him than that.”
