Linux glibc mess

One of the biggest problems with making applications on Linux is how tightly userland compatibility is tied to the system environment.

On Linux, binaries built against newer versions of glibc often won’t run on older distributions or kernels. If you compile your app on a modern distro there’s a good chance users on older systems will get errors about missing GLIBC versions or unsupported symbols. In practice this means developers often have to build on intentionally old systems just to maximize compatibility.

Unlike Windows, you usually can’t just bundle your own libc and forget about it. glibc interacts closely with the kernel and system ABI so shipping a private copy is complicated and unreliable in many cases.

On Windows applications easily ship their own runtime dependencies (such as MSVC runtime DLLs), allowing software built on modern Windows versions to continue running on much older systems with relatively little effort.

As a result building Linux application becomes fragmented and painful. This is such a comically stupid problem for an OS claiming to be developer friendly. What a joke of an OS.
