I worked briefly with a guy who claimed that he was called on to play bass for the Butthole Surfers. He was introduced by some mutual friend, while their bassist was in rehab. He said he played with them on TV; I believe it was on Letterman. Sure enough there is a video of them on Letterman, but the lighting is bad and they never focus on the bass player. I can't even tell if it's him in the video or not.

So did the Butthole Surfers have an obscure replacement bassist for a short time, possibly named John, who performed with them on a TV show?
