Lesson 4-10: Vegetables and/or Fruits in an Arrangement

I explored my local market for interesting items to feature in my ikebana this week. I sketched out the design, so I’d have a bounce point for the final piece.

Here’s a specialty arrangement with red stemmed chard, king oyster mushrooms, lemons, longan fruit still on the stem, artichoke, and hypericum berries.

Lesson 4-11: Using Both Fresh and Unconventional Materials

Utilizing unconventional materials in this arrangement. Molded paper mache wine bottle holders along with green acacia branches, orange mum, purple larkspur, dusky lisianthus, blue pom pom.

Lesson 4-16

Lesson: Paying Attention to the Container and to the Place Where the Arrangement will be Put

This was a windswept feeling arrangement that I was envisioning being displayed on a long table. It would have drama to be admired from both sides and provide space for conversation for those seated on either side of the table.

Materials: Curly willow branches, purple statice, stargazer lilies and leather leaf fern.

End of semester Freestyle

We wrapped up another semester of classes last night. I decided on a freestyle arrangement and was so excited that my sensei only snipped one leaf from what I presented for critique. Materials used are curly willow, stocks, pom poms and lemon leaves.

Lesson 4-5: A Variety of Materials • Mazezashi

Truly a difficult arrangement to put together, as it is not as restrained as typical ikebana. Thanks to u/jaredzimmerman for inspiring me to circle back to finish this lesson in Book 4. :)

"Mazezashi (まぜざし) is a Sogetsu School specific style that uses five or more different types of materials to create a mixed, natural, and often rustic arrangement. It emphasizes blending diverse textures, colors, and types of flowers, weeds, or branches for a full yet airy look."

My mazezashi features white Queen Anne's lace, purple Veronica, lisianthus buds, white mini daisies, purple mini and regular mums, and white snow willow branches.

Lesson 4-13: Dried, Bleached, or Colored Materials

Working with dried materials is more difficult than I expected, because of the fragility of each piece. It was all about gentle flow and respecting the limits of each piece. I brought several options to class with me and ended up creating with dried white birch branches, a dried magnolia branch, several dried yellow billy balls (craspedia) and fresh purple mums.
