Little all-grey bird?

I live in Oxon, on a fairly mature housing estate with big trees, streams, unmowed areas for bugs, and so on.

I just had a little grey bird run into a window, even though there are anti-collision "stickers" on it. Beak was not that of a seed-eater like a grosbeak, more like a blackbird. Definitely adult, just grey all over. The head was darker grey but not black, no eye stripe or cap, some barring on the wings, medium-dark undercarriage.

Size-wise, well, he fit into an average adult hand, so probably beak to tail 8 inches?

Definitely not a swift or swallow, and the tail was in proportion to the rest of him.

Any ideas what he was? I've looked at dunnocks and shrikes, and none of them seem right, he's too big for a sparrow, to dull for a starling, and too light for a blackbird.

And, any advice on what to do with the body? The back fence is 30-ish feet from the house with a good hedge, so maybe the odor wouldn't be too bad if I put him out there for the rest of nature?

I'm making a double wedding ring quilt for a couple who have blue as one of their favourite colours. The background will be white, and while the rest of the fabrics I'm using, from Stuart Hillard's Porcelain and Sea Glass collection, read as blue, I'm not sure about these two. I feel like, if all the other fabrics I'm using have a blue ground, these two might be too low-contrast and might read as holes rather than fabric.

Any opinions? Thanks!

I am contemplating switching employers, which of course will require a new SW visa. Can anyone tell me, can I apply during or even before my notice period without invalidating my current SW visa? In other words:

  • SW visa 1 is currently valid until 2027
  • I would give notice on 1 June
  • notice period for the job covered by SW-1 would run 1 June to 30 August
  • new job would start on 1 September

If I apply for SW visa 2 on say 20 May, to START on 1 Sept, would SW visa 1 be immediately invalidated, or would it be valid until the end of my employment with the relevant employer?
