If you have a disability and self-host (or want to): what is actually missing?

I build free Android apps for Nextcloud, and the longer I do it the more obvious it gets that accessibility is something I check at the end, if at all. I suspect that is true for a lot of this community. We optimize for privacy and control, and then ship something that only works if you can see it, tap precisely, and read fast.

So I would rather ask than guess.

If you use a screen reader, switch control, voice input, magnification, or anything else, I am curious about:

  1. Where does self-hosting break down for you right now? Setup, the web UI, the mobile clients, the docs, something else?
  2. Which big tech service do you keep because nothing self-hosted replaces it accessibly? Be specific if you can.
  3. What would make a self-hosted app usable where a mainstream one currently wins? Proper labels, bigger touch targets, keyboard-only flows, sensible focus order, offline voice input, something I have not thought of?
  4. What do people like me get wrong when we say an app is "accessible"?

I am not selling anything and there is nothing to sign up for. My apps are free and open source and will stay that way. I am asking because concrete feedback is worth more than another accessibility checklist, and because if a few of us act on what comes out of this thread it is a better use of a weekend than another theme toggle.

If you would rather not post publicly, a DM is fine.

PS: Do not downvote because you feel like accessibility is not for you. I am not looking for profits. I genuinely want to help people that want to make use of technology but something is missing for them to make the jump to selfhost.

Nóta v2.0.0 – Handwritten Notes

Summer's winding down, the autumn routine is creeping back in, and much like the A-HA song, summer moved on.

Nóta is a Nextcloud Notes client for Android, and v2.0.0 brings the one thing I've wanted in a notes app for a while: handwritten sketches directly inside any note.

Pen, highlighter, eraser, a full color palette, undo/redo, all inside the editor. No separate app, no workaround. When you save, the sketch uploads to Nextcloud as a PNG so any Nextcloud Notes client can view it. But Nóta also stores a stroke sidecar file alongside it, so reopening the note in Nóta gives you the actual drawing back, not a flattened image you can no longer edit. Stylus users get palm rejection too. Once Nóta detects a stylus on the canvas, accidental finger touches are ignored for the rest of that session.

As always, free, open source, no ads. Built with AI-assisted development, as always disclosed.

If you use Nextcloud and are looking for Android clients beyond Nóta, I've also built a few others in the same spirit, all free, open source, no tracking, and syncing via Nextcloud:

  • Merk - Bookmarks client for Nextcloud Bookmarks
  • Vinci - Personal CRM syncing via CardDAV
  • Blik - Screenshot and media manager with Nextcloud sync
  • Qarib - A "want to visit" places app with geofencing and Nextcloud sync
  • Runa - Personal journal with photo attachments, location, and Nextcloud sync

All available on Google Play and on GitHub.

If Nóta is useful to you, support is always appreciated via GitHub Sponsors, Buy Me a Coffee, or directly if you prefer to skip the platforms.
