I built a battery-powered sensor kit to log air quality in random places. Here is what happens to CO2 in a packed vs empty movie theater (and where should I test it next?)

Hi, I'm Ovidiu. I'm building a startup from scratch and on my journey I want to raise awareness about what I find related to air quality.

I built a portable setup using a mini PC, a router, and some air quality sensors running off battery power. It lets me log environmental data in all sorts of places. I wanted to share some data from a couple of movies I went to recently. This is part of my effort to bring invisible elements surrounding us to the public.

When a crowd sits in a sealed theater for two hours, the air changes fast. Here is what the numbers looked like (I'll let you guess first; tap to reveal):

- Low attendance (10% full): >!CO2 averaged 544 ppm and stayed well below the 1000 ppm mark where air starts feeling stale.!<

- High attendance (90% full): >!CO2 averaged 1246 ppm, peaked at 1312 ppm, and stayed above 1000 ppm for the entire 165-minute screening.!<

Once CO2 crosses that 1000 ppm threshold, we start feeling sluggish, foggy, and sleepy. Add in the fact that temperatures climbed past 27°C (80°F) in both screenings, and your brain pretty much defaults to nap mode.

On the bright side, pm2.5 particulate levels and radon stayed low, so the theater's filters were doing their job. The main issue isn't filtering dust or pollen out, it's bringing in enough fresh outside air to dilute all the exhaled CO2.

If you want to check out the raw logs and breakdowns, I posted them here:

- Movie night - 10% attendance report: https://baseworks.tech/products/risk-assessment/samples/movie-night-few-people/

- Movie night - 90% attendance report: https://baseworks.tech/products/risk-assessment/samples/movie-night-medium-room/

I would love to run more experiments on behalf of the community. What public spaces, events, or transit options are you curious about measuring? Let me know what you want to see!

A massive thank you to all our amazing Bravehearts! 🚀

Building a product from scratch is a journey, and having a dedicated group taking Prototype 1.0 for a spin and sharing their real-world experience makes all the difference. We gathered invaluable insights from our Bravehearts:

🟢 The Wins: The premium build quality, reliable hardware performance, and sleek packaging received fantastic feedback. Our Bravehearts constantly uncovered interesting data about their environment, and we're stoked that some of them even decided to take action based on those insights.

🚧 The Hurdles: Sequential setup steps and multi-page guides are out. You want an absolute zero-setup experience right out of the box: just plug in and go.

We are also excited to officially expand our prototype program to businesses! We are bringing effortless, plug-and-play environment monitoring to commercial spaces to help teams focus on what matters most.

Are you interested in testing prototype units in your office or commercial space? Drop a comment or send us a message! 👇

P.S. Check this out! 🤫 We are giving away 5 setups for free to eligible businesses (terms apply)! Send us a message and secure your spot before all 5 spots are taken.

The dissociative business model pattern

A useful product is not the same thing as a reliable business.

When building, it is tempting to see everything as one continuous technical/logistics project: select suppliers, integrate software, ship equipment, provide support.

We don’t do this.

A customer does not want to inherit our technical journey. They do not want to research devices, understand protocols or wonder whether the data is reliable.

They have a question about their space - something feels uncomfortable, unhealthy or inefficient - and they want evidence that helps them decide what to do next.

This is where the dissociative - or unbundling - business model pattern became meaningful to us [1]. It helped us see three disciplines hiding inside what looked like one project:

  1. Product innovation - explores what is possible.
  2. Customer focus - discovers what is useful.
  3. Infrastructure - makes the experience dependable and repeatable.

For us, that means giving room to innovation without turning every customer deployment into an experiment.

And most importantly - it means listening before delivering.

We separate the 3 disciplines without breaking the connection between them. Innovation creates possibility, while care, structure and reliability turn that possibility into trust.

And trust is the product we want to deliver.

Waking up with a headache in air conditioned room?

Ever woken up with a headache after sleeping in an air-conditioned room?

The temperature may feel comfortable, but with the windows closed, CO2 can build up quickly overnight.

Still, a small change can lead to noticeably better comfort.

Here's what you should know: https://baseworks.tech/blog/the-holiday-wake-up-call/
