Good Harvest

I’m with the Certified Gardeners Association of Passaic County, and am co-leading the development of a new garden for our local food pantry. Thought you all would enjoy a picture of our latest harvest: 113 pounds! We only started planting on May 13th, so we’re hoping to hit 2,000 pounds total by the end of the season.

Help me save these baby trees!

I live in NJ Zone 7b. This is the first year I’ve done only one mowing in early May, and did leave the leaves over winter and spring. To my delight, I have these baby trees popping up everywhere.

There’s sassafras and red maple sprouts and saplings, black cherry and hickory suckers. I also have a white oak bending through some shrubs, maybe a sucker. I don’t need all these trees where they are, so how can I dig them up without killing them so I can move them or give them to friends?

When is the best time to dig them up? Do I pot them and let them grow bigger, or do they need to be direct transplants?

Thanks for your advice!
