Wrong type of stay permit
Hi all! I applied for a long-term residence permit (permesso di soggiorno UE per soggiornanti di lungo periodo – ex carta di soggiorno) and submitted all the required documents. I had my fingerprinting appointment in January 2026.
At the time I applied, my current residence permit was for subordinated employment (lavoro subordinato). Last Thursday, I went to collect my new residence permit, but I saw that it was still a lavoro subordinato permit, with an expiry date in February 2027.
I didn't accept it and asked them to check my case, because I had not applied for a renewal, but for a completely different type of residence permit.
To be clear, here are some points about my situation:
- I'm sure I meet all the requirements for the long-term residence permit.
- At my fingerprinting appointment, they didn't tell me that anything was wrong with my application, so I assumed everything was fine.
- If there was any reason why my application was refused, shouldn't I have been formally given a document stating the reason for the refusal and 10 days to add documents if necessary?
For now, the lady at the immigration office said she would ask the person in charge when they return from holiday, and they would contact me if they have any updates. She also opened my application form and confirmed that I had indeed applied for the long-term residence permit and not for a renewal.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
