As I am reading Slam Dunk now (10 May 26), and I am a huge fan of Takehiko Inoue, I decided to focus the topic of my first game in Basketball. When I was a seven yo (2011), my parents gave me the Nintendo DS with Pokémon Shadows of Almia, 10/10 RPG and still fully behind the shadow (super funny joke) of my second game for that platform, Inazuma Eleven.

Inazuma Eleven changed me; I only play that kind of games nowadays: 2D Pokémon series, full 2D trilogy of Inazuma, and only felt that feeling playing others like Skyrim and Minecraft for some reason I do not really understand (maybe my mind broke at some point as a child).
So obviously I have like 3000 hours on Inazuma Eleven games btw. I know exactly what intention had LEVEL-5, its design patterns, and why it is so extremely addictive for a kid.
Main basis of Inazuma Eleven (DS) success is a combination of:
- Recruitable characters
- Amazing art job
- Possibility to train stats and level up your players
- At that moment, 3D hissatsus (superpowers for shooting, blocking, dribbling and catching) felt like the future.
- Short and simple story (I am talking about the first game), high school football tournament, badass super strong and charismatic players.
Biggest problem might be fourth point. 3D is not futuristic anymore, but wait... It wasn't then neither in 2008. I think of it as a curious game resource. If you combine 2D for world movement, gameplay, etc. 3D suddenly becomes shocking, also when we want our public to be shocked by an amazing 2 kilobyte low-poly Fire Tornado. LEVEL-5 knew this was a double weapon: preserving performance on that platform, but making kids imagine that 3D scenes while they were in the other 90% of 2D gameplay. The same way they used 2D anime scenes to reinforce that feeling.
I will give it all in my hands to accomplish a proper contender to my favourite game series.

I want to give credit to Josee, from Itch.io, in particular for the assets pack titled "Basketball hoops in pixel". By now I just recolored them to match my preferences.

We will start with the match. I want a 5v5 gameplay. We need a key for dribbling, blocking, dunking, layup, and running/walking.
To make easier block/dribble, player will have to choose L/R, if attacker and defender go to same position, block success; else, defender will faint for 1 sec, letting attacker continue. Triple/Double and point values will depend on distance to the court, faults will happen randomly with a probability I haven't thought already, as LEVEL-5 designed faults in 2008.
Maybe u are thinking now about what keys to use for this design, and the next structure might seem proper:
Movement:
Forward: holding R
Backward: holding G
Running Forwards: Repeatedly pushing R (R R R R R R...)
Running Backwards Repeatedly pushing G (G G G G G G...)
(Why? I think player will run when an opportunity happens or defending is necessary, so pushing as many keys as possible results in more adrenalin to the gameplay)
Passing the ball:
We will use the mouse for this, holding click means power to the pass from none to max value of stat in current character. I just figured out something, left and right buttons, Right to address the court, Left to address a player
Skills:
Dribble / Blocking (Depending on ball ownership): LMB / RMB (Depending on which side we want to go)
Dunk / Simple / Layup: SPACEBAR+RMB (Depending on distance to the court)

Map movement will be based on click dragging to wanted direction. I want dialogues to be more blocking, so by proximity, NPCs will talk to player, not player to NPCs.
