Which Nolan film is actually the best? I built a bracket to settle it.

Hi Nolan fans 👋

I run a small movie tournament site called BingeBracket. Every month someone posts their definitive Nolan ranking on here, but there's never really been a way to aggregate across everyone. So I built a bracket to do exactly that — 8 films, head-to-head, giving a crowd-sourced ranking before The Odyssey drops and shakes everything up.

We shortlisted to 8, which means The Dark Knight flies the Batman flag solo and Insomnia and Following sat this one out. Feel free to roast that.

I'll post the results back here in a week or so once people have had a chance to vote.

Hereditary wins the Modern Masters of Horror bracket (Aster vs Peele vs Eggers)

Last week I posted a Masters of Modern Horror tournament — Aster vs Peele vs Eggers — across the 3 directors' subreddits. More than 200 people have played it through now, so I wanted to share with you where things ended up.

Short version: all three directors landed a film on the podium, but Hereditary came out on top.

Championships by film:

  • Hereditary — 29.9%
  • The Lighthouse — 17.3%
  • Get Out — 16.8%
  • Midsommar — 10.3%
  • The Witch — 10.3%
  • Nosferatu — 6.1%
  • Nope — 5.6%
  • Us — 3.7%

By director: Aster 40%, Eggers 34%, Peele 26%.

A few things from the matchup data I thought were worth sharing:

  • The biggest first-round blowout was The Witch vs Us — 71-29.
  • Hereditary vs Get Out was the most common semifinal (98 plays, meaning both films consistently advanced out of round one). Hereditary took it 66-34.
  • The closest matchup in the whole bracket was The Witch vs Nope in the semis — 52-48. Basically a coin flip.
  • Hereditary vs The Lighthouse was the matchup that took voters the longest to decide on average.

Plenty of people in the launch comments said you can't really compare these three directors and that's fair — they're all doing pretty different things. The bracket is more about which individual films stuck with people than about crowning anyone.

Cregger seems to be the name everyone wanted in this one, so we will do that in the next couple of weeks.

Hey Aster fans 👋

I run a small movie tournament site called BingeBracket. We wanted to see how Ari Aster's films stack up against the other two directors who've defined modern horror this past decade — so I built a bracket: Aster vs. Jordan Peele vs. Robert Eggers.

8 films, 3 rounds, takes about a minute:

- Hereditary, Midsommar (Aster)

- Get Out, Us, Nope (Peele)

- The Witch, The Lighthouse, Nosferatu (Eggers)

Early voting has Hereditary tied with Get Out - curious to see whether enough Aster fans can swing it :)
