Hi fellow Dune fans,

Dune might be your favorite Denis Villeneuve film, but how would you rank the rest of his work? We made a bracket to find out — Dune and Dune: Part Two against the rest of his films since 2010 (Sicario, Arrival, Prisoners, Enemy, Incendies, Blade Runner 2049):

Worth knowing going in: Incendies is actually his highest-rated film on IMDb, ahead of both Dune films. I have a feeling that won't be reflected in the final bracket results though...

A couple of weeks ago I put up an 8-film Nolan bracket. Just over 200 people played it all the way through, and I wanted to share the results with the community.

The final standings (share of brackets each film won):

1. The Dark Knight — 25%
2. Interstellar — 22%
3. Inception — 14%
4. The Prestige — 13%
5. Oppenheimer — 12%
6. Memento — 6%
7. Tenet — 4%
8. Dunkirk — 3%

The Dark Knight won the popular vote — but it never ran away with it.

This was actually much closer than the final 25–22 makes it look. The lead changed several times as the votes came in. The Dark Knight shot out early, rising to 40% in the first dozen or so votes, but then settled back as Interstellar climbed and overtook it through the middle stretch. The two films traded back and forth the whole way.

And here's the catch someone flagged on the original bracket: Interstellar and The Dark Knight got drawn into the same half, so they collided in the semis. When Interstellar did make it through, it won 77% of those finals. (Next time I'd seed the two apart so they can't collide early, although I did enjoy the chaos.)

Most common bracket

Here's the single most common bracket people picked. You can see that Interstellar gets knocked out by The Dark Knight in the semis, and it's Inception that ends up as runner-up in the typical path, even though Interstellar edges it for #2 overall:

A few other things that jumped out:

• Dunkirk got crushed. It only won 3% of its brackets despite a 7.5 rating on TMDB. The bracket format is good at revealing films that are highly respected but rarely actually picked.
• Inception is the eternal bridesmaid. It reached the final 40% of the time, but only closed it out in about a third of those (again, partly because of the seeding).
• The Prestige is the connoisseur's pick. It came 4th in the voting, but it was the runaway favorite in the comments on the original post, and it was stuck on the death side of the bracket too, forced to beat Interstellar just to advance. 4th almost certainly undersells how this sub actually feels about it.

So we ended up with a winner, but maybe not a definitive answer to which is Nolan's best movie, and tbh I'd be a little disappointed if we did. I wouldn't want to leave this sub with nothing to argue about :). So have at it: is The Dark Knight actually his greatest? Tell me I'm wrong, tell me the seeding was rigged — good takes or bad, I want to hear them.

I run a small movie tournament site called BingeBracket. Every month someone posts their definitive Nolan ranking on here, but there's never really been a way to aggregate across everyone. So I built a bracket to do exactly that — 8 films, head-to-head, giving a crowd-sourced ranking before The Odyssey drops and shakes everything up.

We shortlisted to 8, which means The Dark Knight flies the Batman flag solo and Insomnia and Following sat this one out. Feel free to roast that.

I'll post the results back here in a week or so once people have had a chance to vote.
