Short Row Heel Fit on Colourwork Socks
Hello! I've been knitting socks for a couple of months now and have recently learned the shadow wrap short row heel which is by far my favourite in terms of how easy it is to do and how nice the finished heel looks (no ridges from the decreases). I also prefer it to an afterthought heel as I can try the sock on as I go.
On vanilla socks, I've found the fit to be good. My socks are 72 stitches cast on, working the heel over half the stitches and I decrease an extra row to have a 13/10/13 split for a little extra room. I'm working on my first colourwork sock and the fit is a little more snug. I've been looking at options for improving this in future, and it seems that most of the gusset options would interrupt the colourwork pattern?
Would my best option be to work slightly more than half the stitches for the heel, to create more room without interrupting the pattern? Or is there another heel option I could use for colourwork socks that might fit better? My preference would still be to work the heel as I get to it, rather than an afterthought heel (for both ease of trying on and to avoid the inexplicable dread that comes with going back to it later).
Thanks in advance for any advice! I've been trying to find the solution on my own, but haven't convinced myself I've found the right thing so far.
