She Who Must Not Be Named

She Who Must Not Be Named

I was absentmindedly scrolling Threads when I came across this little gem: someone breaking down the history of the Lady Dior bag and the irony of Camilla constantly wearing it. If you’re viewing the post with your phone, you’ll need to click on the photo to view the full image. 🤭

This gave me a hearty chuckle.

Didn’t Meg create the same phenomenon with the Strathberry tote?

Matthew Macfadyen

Somehow, I’ve managed to live most of my life without having read Jane Austen. I’ve been an avid reader since I was a child. I’ve read the big literary authors (Brontë, Wollstonecraft, Shelley, Keats, Homer…so on so forth). I was an English major in college for goodness sakes. Never read Austen. I’m just as baffled as much as you probably are. As such, while I have loved period dramas since at least high school, I completely ignored 2005’s Pride & Prejudice. I did see Emma (1996), but that was because I was a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow. This was before GOOP, “conscious uncoupling”, and all of the other spectacular milestones that she’s reached on her way to full twathood. Of course, I’ve seen Clueless. I’m not uncultured. I can quote that movie, thank you very much.

This year, I made a book resolution to read all of Austen’s novels, which I’ve completed. Which brings me to my point. This sub’s obsession with Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Darcy. I thought that all of you had completely lost the plot.

You see, MY introduction to Mr. Macfadyen was as the character of Tom Wambsgans in the HBO drama, Succession. Whenever someone would post a Mr. Darcy thirst trap, I would just scroll on by. Can’t relate to you people.

But as I sit here watching the movie, I’m starting to see the appeal. The cognitive dissonance is still there, but I’m able to reason with myself: Bluebonnet, it IS possible for Tom Wambs…uh…MATTHEW Macfadyen to be attractive. He is rather handsome with his ridiculous sideburns and perpetual brooding.

So there you have it. I’m joining you in your shenanigans.

By the way, Matthew also voices Lord Voldemort in the full cast adaptation of the Harry Potter series, so that’s yet another thing that my brain is going to have to reconcile.

EDIT: Thanks so much for the award! I’ve finished the movie, and while the BBC series is more accurate to me, the film certainly has its charm. Mr. Darcy, so tortured by his love for Lizzie that he can’t even be bothered to close his shirt as he walks aimlessly through the fog sells it. And I’m a sucker for a forehead kiss.
