I submitted this plant when I first got it and it only had one leaf so it was difficult to identify and intimately I wasn’t able to figure out what it is. Now that it’s growing new shoots I’m hoping it has enough characteristics that it can be identified. Seems to prefer partial light and watering a couple times a week.
I’m pretty tired of Asian exceptionalism in media especially the current trend of Japan glazing. I feel like this film is one of many in Hollywood (think bullet train) that disguises major plot issues under ‘they’re just Japanese, they can do that because they work so hard of course that’s how they are bs’.
Believe me I loved the Filipino representation with Ned, but aside from his interactions with his lola in the last film this is the only Asian representation in the series. To me it portrays Asian American (and I don’t even know if they’re Asian Americans or just Japanese because they are spoken to ONLY in Japanese but it’s implied they’re Asian Americans. I think…) I just really hate when movies portray Asian American as a self segregating people obsessed with their ethnicity’s culture. That’s what ‘The hand’ felt like to me.
TL;DR: ‘The Hand’ isn’t good representation. They come off as vaguely Asian. They are portrayed as just generally Asian, not especially Japanese or Asian American, just Asian foreigners.
