Weber Co Library - Book Damage

I took out a book and returned it to the Weber County library last week (after only having it for 2 to 3 days). It was reported for damage, which came with a $5 fee. I went in to ask about the damage, as I wasn’t sure what they were reporting on. I thought it must have been a mistake.

They showed me the damage, and it was the smallest amount of water damage. It was such a small amount, that I looked through it on my own after and it took me going page by page to find the damage again. It was a very light amount on the edge of a few pages, didn’t tear any of the pages, smear any of the words, nor ruin the integrity of the book.

I’m curious if this is common for the Weber County library or if anyone else has experienced this? I’m newer to the area, and this was actually only the second book I had ever taken out with them. Previous libraries I’ve borrowed from have never reported anything like this before, and it makes me not want to take out another physical book from them again if I have to return it in pristine condition.

I know that this is a tiny problem, and at the end of the day I’m happy to support the local libraries, but with this economy, I’m fed up with there being a cost for everything I do.
