Flea/worm treatment-- how to apply to skin when it's fur all the way down?

I adopted my first BSH from a rescue last month. Betty is 7 and is perfection in every way. She's strictly indoors (I'm in an upper floor flat with no access to outside at all) but the rescue and vet both recommended that she still get a monthly flea/worm treatment as she was covered in scabs when she was first dropped of at the rescue from a flea allergy (elderly owner with too many cats who wasn't able to care for them anymore). Easy peasy, spread the fur between their shoulders, squirt the treatment on their skin, done. Except the BSH coat is so dense I can't see skin! It's just... fur on top of more fur. How do y'all give your babies their flea meds? It just ended up dripping down her back and she tried to lick it off (which she regretted immediately).

TL; dr: how do you apply flea/worm treatment with such a thick coat?
