Album Thoughts After Listening

I had the opportunity to listen to the full album on CD this past week and I wanted to share my thoughts after listening. I’ve been apprehensive about Floresence because the singles did not do for me what Maisie’s music normally does for me so if you feel similarly this post might be helpful to you. I’ll try to say how I feel about the songs we haven’t heard (or at least, I hadn’t heard) before now without giving away too much about the album. I just want to reassure fans like myself who maybe aren’t feeling the singles as much that there is a LOT to love about the album.

Songs I LOVE:

You Then Me Now

Old Fashioned - this one reminds me thematically almost of Dear John by Taylor Swift. All about calculated male manipulators and their victims (Sidenote, I really really want Maisie to release Male Manipulator so bad btw. Maybe for the deluxe?). Anyways, this one is soooo good and has gotten stuck in my head multiple times this week. You can feel her derision towards the subject in her voice.

If You Let Me - I’m never really a fan of duets in general but their voices sound really nice together. I love how soft the production is. Maisie is pleading with her ex to leave her alone so she can heal. Sonically it almost reminds me of The Lumineers at times, which must be the Mumford & Sons influence.

Flat Earther - this is my second favorite song on the album. She does this thing with her voice in the chorus that is so beautiful to me and it really scratches an itch in my brain. She sounds better than ever on this song specifically, you can really hear how strong her voice is. The situationship girlies are going to eat this one up, all about deluding yourself about how someone feels about you.

Questions - this one is so fun to sing in the car! I love it and I wish it had been a single prior to album release because it would have gotten me more hyped than the actual singles. The most TGW song on the album to me. We’ve heard snippets so you can kind of guess what it’s about lol

Girl’s Just Flying - my favorite! This one makes me tear up when I’m listening to it even though it’s not sad AT ALL. It feels like a followup to There It Goes. Anyone coming out on the other side of a breakup will love this one. It feels like a warm summer evening after spending all day having fun with your friends. I love how there’s this thing on the chorus where it sounds like she’s singing with all of her friends.

Songs I like:

Say My Name In Your Sleep

Kingmaker

My Regards

You You You

Vampire Time - I think this one was too hyped up for me by fans. It’s cute but not one I will skip others to listen to. I like how you can kind of hear her smiling while she's singing this one.

Songs that are okay to me:

Audrey Hepburn

Mary Janes - the concept of this song is cute but I kept skipping it this week, maybe if I was dating someone I might like it more! I think it’s funny all the love songs are my least favorites. She has a line that makes me laugh about teenagers making fun of her on the internet. I do love how honest she is on this one, it feels like a journal entry almost.

Nothing Like Being In Love - I think it fits as the last song on the standard version of the album but nothing really jumped out at me as something I really really like about it. I kept going back to the 5 songs before it because those are all my favorites lol. So maybe I just need more time to appreciate this one.

Overall I mostly listened to this while driving around my city where it has been rainy for the past week and it is the perfect album for a dreary spring day. I wasn’t a huge fan of the pivot back to the softer acoustic sounding production but it really works as an overall tone for the album. I liked it way more than the singles made me think I would and listening to the album as one whole body of work made me like some of the singles a lot more! I was suprised that so many of them were in my Love and Like categories as I was writing this. So yeah, if you’re feeling anxious because the album rollout hasn’t been working for you hopefully this gives you something to look forward to ❤️
