Thoughts on A Thousand Sons & Prospero Burns
Finished Prospero Burns today and read it right after A Thousand Sons. ATS made me really dislike the Space Wolves and think of them as nothing more than the Emperor's dumb unquestioning dogs.
I was okay with that, since that wasn't their book, ATS is about Magnus and his boys. I adored it too, great characters, interesting lore and an interesting ending. Ahriman is one of the coolest characters I've come across, almost like a space Constantine. McNeill delivered the goods here like he did with Fulgrim. Both are my fave Heresy books thus far. ATS left me wanting more
Going into Prospero Burns I knew not to expect much Prospero burning. Okay thats fine. Abnett made me care about Ultramarines in Know No Fear so I was hoping he'd achieve the same feat here with PB. Alas I found this book surprisingly boring. No interesting characters and despite many Space Wolves claiming they aren't just stupid dogs, the book goes on to prove that indeed they are just stupid dogs. The book is told from only one characters perspective as well which I found really limiting and disappointing. Boggles my mind this book is getting a reprint over ATS.
For context I've read: 1-7, 9 & 10 (reading 11 now on walks), 12-15, 19 and 24.
So there's my hot take. I loved A Thousand Sons & it did everything I wanted it to and more. Prospero Burns dare I say it? You can skip it. I'm left feeling surprised that I had this reaction to an Abnett book.
