Closet Ceiling Repair: What should I do to address the lathing specifically?

Working on repairing the ceiling in a walk in closet. The house is old (over 100 years) and the ceiling has plaster lathing that has broken. The attic is above this closet and when I went to look at the spot where picture 1 is, there’s nothing else broken out. I’m just not sure how to patch this well. Do I need to cut out the lathing? Any insight is appreciated.

The horror. Trypophobia (among any other phobias) warning.

I saw this, loaded it here, put my phone down, and I’m going for a walk to try not to remember this.
