The annual Burning Man festival, known for its celebration of radical self-reliance and community, is scheduled for 2026. However, in the aftermath of the devastating wildfires around Pyramid Lake and Reno, Nevada, it has become critical to reassess where our priorities and resources are allocated.

This year, more than ever before, we have an opportunity to demonstrate solidarity with our neighbors who have lost their homes, livelihoods, and loved ones to the unforgiving fires. By canceling Burning Man 2026, we can redirect the vast resources typically used for the festival to assist with the recovery and rebuilding efforts.

Nevada is still burning. Families around Pyramid Lake and Reno have lost everything to devastating wildfires, and recovery is going to take years. Meanwhile, Burning Man 2026 is scheduled to roll in with 70,000 people and staggering resources.

I started a petition asking the festival to pause in 2026—not to end Burning Man, but to redirect what it takes to run it. Think about it: 8,000–12,000 generators, 2,500–4,000 box trucks, millions of gallons of fuel and water, $150+ million in total economic mobilization. Right now, those resources could be powering evacuation shelters, delivering construction materials, restocking medical facilities, and getting supplies to people rebuilding from ash.

This is about living the values Burning Man actually stands for—community, participation, taking care of each other. What good is radical self-reliance if we can't show up for neighbors in crisis? What would you want someone to do if this was your family? If this feels right to you too, consider signing and sharing the petition. Let's see if we can turn a year off into real recovery for the communities that need it most.
