FCO to USA experience (19 May 2026)

Just sharing in case it helps anyone. I was on an 9:30am flight on ITA.

6:32: Dropped off at FCO Terminal 1

6:43: Finished checking in/dropping off bags at the ITA counter

7:00: Through security. One of the x-ray machines was down and I heard a woman complaining that she'd been waiting for 30 minutes but they had opened up another x-ray machine while I was in line so the delay didn't really impact me.

You walk for a while through the shops and duty free, before you get the Gate E area, where you have an additional passport scan and handprint, but there was zero line when I was there. No passport stamp.

After that there are more shops and restaurants for the Gate E flights - both Italian (like Caffe Kimbo) and non-Italian (like Ajisen Ramen). I had more than enough time to get breakfast and not feel like I was in a rush.

USA to FCO airport experience (11 May 2026)

Flew in from LAX and landed around 12:00pm. After de-boarding, getting on the bus to the terminal, and then followed the green line/signs to immigration. There was a massive queue and a bit of chaos but the workers directed us away from the queue and over to the left. People with EU passports were able to hop out and go right to a machine. Americans and others waited in line, used machines to scan passports, got your photo taken, and then went to the immigration person to get your stamp. My fingerprints/hand were never scanned and I wasn’t asked the usual questions (purpose of your visit, how long are you staying, etc.).

Whole thing from end of the queue to getting my passport stamp was 11 minutes.

Taxi line was insane so we walked to the Uber pickup location (3 minutes walk) and picked up an Uber for €55 into the city.

Just sharing in case it helps anyone with their expectations/planning.
