'Once-in-a-lifetime' discovery found in cave hidden beneath paddock

We've just built a little overnight pen for a couple of very active dogs. The main part is loose gravel so it's not a mud pit, but there's a bare slightly sloped area we'd like to plant something on so they have something softer to be on as well. Looking for a resilient ground cover which can handle dogs walking on it.
The patch is fairly small, only a couple metres each direction so even a single low growing creeper plant would likely cover it if that's an option too. Would prefer not to mow it if possible as it'd be a bit of a pain.
We are in eastern Melbourne, it is north facing but between two buildings so shaded a lot of the day too.
Appreciate any suggestions 🙂
