John’s Valley formation, southeast Oklahoma. Creek find. I don’t have a picture before I started taking flakes off it. I’ve been hounding for chert for several years now in this area and have never come across something like this. The chert near the cortex is smooth and all the black stuff in the middle looks freeze cracked (or something).
One of the weirdest rocks I’ve found. The core is super rough while the material near the cortex is still good. Anyone ever heard of a freeze cracked core? First one I’ve found like this.
Personal find. Gonna have to start checking the ugly ones too. Hoping for a pickwick but we’ll see.
Not sure if the dimensions are quite right. Reworked a piece that popped a chunk of the tip off during pressure flaking. Tried to preserve the banding as best I could l. I think it might be Kay county chert but I’m on the southern end of the formation so I’m not sure. Kinda steppy but still fun to work.
Another cookie crumbled. Any suggestions on where to go with this?
Found a piece of gravel that looked promising so I starting to bust into. The more I struck the more cracks showed on the first side I worked. Took a whack on the other side to reveal absolute candy. Don’t judge a book by the first half? Or something like that.
Traded a chunk of some local stuff for this slab. Anyone have any experience knapping petrified palm? Does it normally need to be heat treated to work properly? I tried to take a test flake off the very end and it seemed like I was gonna break the slab before anything released.
