Fault activity during earthquake caught on video for a second time

Fault movement has been caught on video surveillance in the July 2026 "Kumamoto" earthquake in Yatsushiro City, Japan. Geologists led by Professor Chiba of Kunamoto University harvested rice by hand in order to avoid damaging the fault terrain and study the fault.

Once the land was cleared, Professor Chiba commented that the terrain was well-preserved and surprisingly easy to understand. While the video appears to depict the rice field rising up, the section with the camera actually subsided (dropped) by 80 cm and moved laterally by 1 meter.

As this is only the second instance ever of earthquake fault activity being caught on video, Professor Chiba hopes to preserve the area for research and disaster education, including the buildings which sustained damage in the earthquake.
