A friend and I were trying to create a top 5 list of the best Mets transactions where we acquired a major league player who turned out to be a phenomenal signing or trade. We obviously have a lot of examples of situations going the other way, but it was harder to create a list of the best examples of Mets dealing for a major league talent that significantly beat expectations.
To be clear, we're talking about players who were not expected to be stars/extremely productive, but turned out that way. So a trade for Piazza or signing Beltran wouldn't fit the bill; these guys were already All-Stars with hefty price tags that warranted the deal.
