What Was Your Job Search Experience Like?

Hello! Plz lmk if this is not allowed!

I’m an incoming graduate student, and I chose NJIT because employers seem to trust that the graduates they hire are competent and well-prepared for the roles they apply to.

I was instantly drawn to NJIT because I wanted a strong, well-rounded education.

I’m curious about your experience applying for jobs after attending NJIT. I know NJIT has career fairs and other resources, but I’d love to hear about your personal experience with internships, networking, and the job search process or if NJIT helped you in terms of helping with job search

Will completing the first year online hurt my chances of getting research experience?

Hellooo! Please let me know if this isn’t allowed.

I’m starting my M.S. in Bioinformatics in a couple of weeks, and my end goal is to pursue a PhD afterward. Unfortunately, because of financial constraints, I’ll have to complete my first year entirely online. I’m worried that’s going to affect my ability to get involved in research, build relationships with professors, and find opportunities to join a lab.

I’ll be the first to earn a master’s, and hopefully the first to apply for a PhD. So…to say I’m lost is a bit of an understatement.

I don’t really have anyone in my life who’s been through this process and can tell me what I should be doing.

What should I be focusing on from day one? Should I be reaching out to professors right away, attending office hours, looking for remote research opportunities, or just concentrating on getting good grades during my first semester? Since my goal is a PhD, I don’t want to accidentally miss out on opportunities because I didn’t know they were important.

I’m too late to switch out to in-person for my first semester but i can for my second If necessary.

I’d really appreciate any advice

Laptop for MS Bioinformatics

Hey everyone!

I’m starting my M.S. in Bioinformatics this September. I’ve been looking through the website for laptop/tech requirements, but I can’t seem to find anything specific for the bioinformatics program just overall

For anyone currently in the program, what laptop would you recommend? I have a 2021 MacBook Pro right now, but it’s starting to give out as is anyways so I’m looking to replace it with something that’ll last me through grad school. Any suggestions for the laptop or other accessories that helped you? Thanks!

hours cut , company not helping

I’m looking for advice who has dealt with something similar.

I started a BT position with a case that was supposed to be 20 hours a week. The commute is about a one-hour round trip every day, but with 20 hours a week it was manageable because the pay covered the gas and time and i was able to afford my bills and save a little.

Recently, the family changed their schedule and my hours were suddenly reduced to 10 hours a week (2 hours a day, 5 days a week) with no notice at all. The commute stayed the same, but now I’m making half the income. At this point, one shift alone does not even cover my gas for the week, and I’m starting to fall behind on my bills because the situation is becoming a financial hardship.

I brought this up to the staffing department and my clinical manager over a month ago and have reached out multiple times trying to find a solution. I have been clear that I want to continue working I’m not refusing the case but I need something that is financially sustainable.

The only alternative they offered was another case with a 2-hour round trip commute and even fewer hours, which would have created an even bigger financial burden. Other than that, I have not been given any other options or a resolution.

I’m now escalating the issue because I feel like I’ve been patient and have continued showing up while waiting for help, but I’m not sure what else I can do.

Has anyone dealt with a situation where your client’s hours were reduced and your company couldn’t provide enough hours? Did you wait it out, request reassignment, or was there another solution?

I don’t want to quit , i applied for partial unemployment but it’s going to be three weeks and it’s not even enough to cover everything i’d rather work.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Is this appropriate

Hi guys, please let me know if this isn’t allowed.

I’m a new BT, and I have a young non-verbal client. Over the past three months I’ve been with her, she has shown such incredible progress throughout sessions. Aggression is rare now, and her functional communication skills have improved drastically. I’m so proud of her, but it hasn’t been without challenges.

She is supposed to be getting 26 hours of sessions a week; however, her parents’ schedule only allowed for 20. After a month and a half, the parents began complaining that they wanted to nap, etc., and my hours got reduced to 10. But that’s not the issue. The issue is that she is on her iPad from the moment she gets home from school until I get there, and then right after I leave until they decide to take it away, which is usually when the dad wakes up for work at 3–4 a.m. She then wakes up at 7:30 to go to school. This client isn’t even old enough to be in first grade.
This has been resulting in severe fatigue throughout our sessions since I started. I write it down in my notes, but I’m beginning to grow frustrated because the sessions end up being a tantrum fest since she is exhausted, and the parents seem to just be giving her the iPad so they don’t have to deal with her, i get comments from the parents “she only seems to be asking you for things” “she only wants to play with someone because she’s with you” ect ect and they have noted the changes yet when the BCBA asks “ it’s just because she warmed up to her (me)”

I write all of this in my notes, but I don’t know if it’s appropriate to emphasize this with my BCBA, she is aware but i’m getting the ever more frustrated. Her sleep schedule gets even more complicated during breaks from school as she just sleeps during the day and is awake all night. I’m growing frustrated because I don’t know how ethical this is, considering she is running on about three hours of sleep a day. Then, instead of letting her sleep when I leave, they just give her the iPad. The parents also stopped parent sessions because they said, “It wasn’t doing anything.” I never once saw them implement the plan.

I don’t know if my frustrations come from just being too attached to her. She is my first client, and I’m very invested in her progress.

Edit : i forgot to add like my question lol

Is it appropriate to have a more serious discussion with my BCBA about my frustrations on whats causing her fatigue and how it affects the session ?

I can count on one hand the amount of times i DIDN’T write “Fatigue was a barrier to skill acquisition”

Unsure about staying on

Here’s your updated version with that added in smoothly and still Reddit-appropriate:

Hi, I’m not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I’m a pretty new home-based BT and I’ve been with my current client for about 2 months.

I was paired with a young nonverbal client with significant communication delays. When I started, she had very limited functional communication (mostly just leading adults to what she wanted). Over the past 2 months though, she’s made really great progress. Her manding has improved a lot, she’s more independently communicating what she needs/wants, and she recently imitated a sound for the first time since I’ve been working with her.
I honestly really love this job and I’ve gotten really excited about her progress. It’s been super rewarding seeing her developmental gains session to session.

The main issues I’m running into are with caregivers and consistency at home.

From the beginning, there’s seemed to be a mismatch in expectations about ABA, like they seem to expect her to eventually be “normal”/indistinguishable from neurotypical kids, which I’ve had to redirect to my BCBA.

We’ve also had a lot of issues with routines at home, especially sleep and screen time. Her sleep schedule is very off and she’s often up really late, which means she’s pretty tired during sessions and it affects how much she can engage. There also seems to be pretty inconsistent limits around screens outside of session, which makes transitions and behavior regulation harder.

There’s also been some tension around scheduling. One caregiver has mentioned being frustrated that sessions interfere with his ability to nap after work, which has come up more than once.

On top of that, I was originally scheduled for about 15 hours a week, which got bumped up to around 20 before I even started. Recently though, the family said it’s either they cut it down to like 2-hour sessions / way fewer hours or they’ll stop services completely. The timing of the reduced 2-hour request also happens to line up with when the caregiver gets home and typically takes his nap, which was mentioned as part of the reasoning. It wasn’t really a discussion, more like an ultimatum.
There also seems to be a pattern of threatening to discontinue services when requests aren’t met, which I’ve been told is something that has caused previous BTs to leave.

We also get a lot of last-minute schedule changes and pressure to come in earlier with very little notice. When I can’t make it work, the responses can sometimes feel rude or passive-aggressive, like it’s not really a request.

I really do care about this client and I want to keep helping her, which is why this has been frustrating. At the same time, I’m also starting to stress a bit because the new schedule is going to make it hard for me financially and I’m not really able to rely on.

I’ve already reached out to my coordinator about possibly being reassigned, but I’m not sure if I’m overthinking this or if this is actually a situation where stepping away is normal.

NJIT grad cert credits into another MS program?

Helloooo i’m seeking some perspective since i wanna do the MS in Bioinformatics at NJIT, but I was thinking about starting with the Graduate Certificate in Computer Science first and then transitioning into the Bioinformatics master’s later.

I already emailed the school and I’m waiting to hear back, but I wanted to ask here too in case anyone’s done something similar.

When I compared the courses, I noticed a bunch of overlap between the CS grad cert and the Bioinformatics MS, specifically:

CS 506 – Foundations of Computer Science
CS 631 – Data Management System Design
CS/DS 675 – Machine Learning
CS 632 – Advanced Database System Design
CS/DS 644 – Introduction to Big Data

The cert only needs 4 classes, so my thought process was that if I meet the 3.0 GPA requirement, instead of continuing into the MS in Computer Science, I’d apply those credits toward the MS in Bioinformatics since the courses overlap.

Has anyone at NJIT transferred grad certificate credits into a different master’s program before?

Especially within Ying Wu/CS/data science related programs?

Did they let you transfer all the credits or only some?
