If Providence designed its city flag today, what would it look like?

Over the past couple of decades, a number of cities have redesigned their flags, moving away from complicated "seal on a bedsheet" designs toward simpler, more recognizable flags that better reflect the places they represent.

It got me wondering: if Providence designed its city flag today, what would it look like?

This isn't anything official. I'm just curious to see what artists, designers, historians, vexillology fans, and anyone who loves Providence would come up with.

What symbols, colors, landmarks, or ideas feel uniquely Providence? Feel free to sketch something, share inspiration, or describe your idea. I think it would be fun to see how different people represent the city in a single flag.

Welcome Clay Holstad. A quick intro from the RIFC fans at Tide Talk

Hey Dallas fans, figured you could use some background on your new loan pickup, Clay Holstad, from someone who's watched him since day one in Providence.

Clay's been a foundational piece of Rhode Island FC since the club kicked off in 2024. He broke out immediately as an all-action, do-everything midfielder. Finished that first season ranked among the league's top 10 midfielders by FotMob rating, chipped in five goals (including a goal of the season winner), and was voted the club's Player of the Season by our supporters' group. He was a big part of the midfield that helped carry RIFC all the way to the USL Championship final that year.

Year two was rougher. Roster issues and injuries pushed him out to right wing back for most of the season, which was tough to watch given how good he is in the middle of the park. This year he'd been back in his natural midfield role and playing some of his best soccer yet, already matching his career high in assists through 18 appearances.

Off the field, he's the type of guy you want representing a club. He's always one of the last players out at autograph alley after matches, rain or shine, win or lose, making sure every last kid and adult fan gets their moment with him.

We're going to miss him a lot, but happy he's getting this shot. Take care of him, Dallas. He'll take care of you.

Pre-Match Essentials | Rhode Island FC @ Sacramento Republic FC | Wed, Jul 8, 2026 | 10:30 PM ET

No Time to Catch Our Breath

The USL's month-long World Cup break is officially behind us, and Rhode Island FC is wasting no time getting back into league play.

After returning from the month-long pause with a statement performance against Western Conference leaders Orange County SC, the Tide are right back on the road for one of their toughest trips of the year. Wednesday brings a cross-country flight to California for the club's first ever visit to Sacramento Republic FC.

Saturday's 1-1 draw only added a single point to the standings, but it somehow felt like much more. Before kickoff, most supporters probably would have happily taken a draw against the top team in the West. Ninety minutes later, it felt like Rhode Island had let two points slip away.

The Tide dominated nearly every meaningful statistic. They outshot Orange County 24-2, earned a 10-2 advantage in corners, and recorded 44 touches inside the opponent's penalty area compared to just nine for Orange County. It was the kind of performance that leaves you believing this club belongs with the league's best. If Rhode Island can play like that against the Western Conference leaders, they can line up against anyone.

Where We Stand

Twelve matches into the campaign, Rhode Island sits ninth in the Eastern Conference with 16 points from a 4W-4D-4L record. On the surface, it looks like a team sitting just outside the playoff line. Dig a little deeper, though, and the picture becomes much more encouraging.

The Tide have played just 12 league matches, fewer than every club currently above them except Indy Eleven. That leaves Rhode Island with multiple opportunities to make up ground while controlling much of its own destiny during the second half of the season.

The underlying numbers tell an equally promising story. Rhode Island's +6 goal differential is tied for the fourth best mark in the Eastern Conference, while its 22 goals scored also rank among the conference's best despite having played fewer matches than nearly everyone around them. Add in an unbeaten run of three straight matches across all competitions and 12 goals scored over the club's last five games, and it certainly feels like the momentum pendulum is beginning to swing in Rhode Island's favor.

Who We're Facing

Sacramento Republic enters Wednesday sitting 10th in the Western Conference, but the similarities between these clubs are hard to ignore.

Like Rhode Island, Sacramento owns a 4W-4D-4L record and has collected 16 points through 12 league matches. They also have at least one game in hand on every team currently above them in the Western Conference standings, making their current position feel a little deceptive.

They've taken a much different path to get there. While Rhode Island has become one of the league's more dangerous attacking teams, Sacramento has built its season around defense. The Republic has scored just 13 goals, the second fewest in the USL Championship, but has also conceded only 12, which ranks among the league's best. Nearly every Sacramento match has been decided by the slimmest of margins.

That defensive identity has kept Sacramento competitive despite an attack that has struggled to find consistency. After finishing near the top of the Western Conference in each of the past three seasons, the Republic enters Wednesday looking to rediscover the form that has made them one of the league's model organizations for years. With only two points separating them from a playoff spot and three games in hand, there is still plenty of time for them to climb the table.

Rhody Randoms

  • Rhode Island's 24 shots against Orange County were the most in a regular season match in club history. The two shots allowed were the fewest the club has ever conceded in a regular season match.
  • Wednesday marks Rhode Island FC's first ever trip to Sacramento. The Tide are still searching for its first victory against Republic FC after going 0-1-2 in the clubs' first three meetings.

Hands on the Pulse

Matt Hands believes the biggest storyline on Wednesday will be Rhode Island's midfield. With Clay Holstad expected to miss time, players like Hugo Bacharach and Amos Shapiro-Thompson will have an even larger role to play. He also takes a closer look at Sacramento, a club that has quietly become one of the USL's toughest defensive teams while also being one of its least productive attacks. Curious how those two things can both be true? Check out his full Prematch Lookout on the newly refreshed TideTalkRI.com .

Vibe Check

West Coast road trips are never easy. Add in a quick turnaround, a three-hour time change, and a well-rested Sacramento side, and Wednesday becomes one of Rhode Island's toughest tests of the season. Still, after the way the Tide played against Orange County, there's every reason to believe they can head west and come home with a result.

That also means we're officially back for another edition of RIFC After Dark, our completely unofficial tradition where East Coast supporters willingly sacrifice a little sleep for late-night soccer. Let's ride the Tide, embrace another edition of RIFC After Dark, and keep this momentum rolling.

Pre-Match Essentials | Rhode Island FC vs Orange County SC | Sat Jul 4, 2026 | 7:30 PM ET

The Summer of Soccer Rolls On: Back to Business

The last time we saw Rhode Island FC in league play, the boys put on one of their most complete performances of the season - a 4-1 dismantling of Loudoun United down in Virginia that saw four different players find the scoresheet. RIFC rolled into the World Cup break on back-to-back wins, scoring an eye-popping 11 goals across its previous four matches in all competitions.

And then the World Cup arrived.

Honestly, what a month it's been. Providence was invaded by kilts, bagpipes, and chants as Scotland's supporters, the Tartan Army, descended on our region. Ghana has called The Graduate Hotel home for their time in the tournament. Cape Verde became everyone's favorite underdog by crashing into the knockout rounds. Portugal keeps tightening its grip on Southern New England's Portuguese community with every result. Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, and Mexico have once again reminded everyone why they're tournament heavyweights. And now, the United States is back in the Round of 16, with a massive showdown against Belgium standing between the Americans and the quarterfinals.

For the last month, our little corner of New England has had a front-row seat to the world's game. Fans from every corner of the globe have packed trains, bars, restaurants, and the streets around Boston Stadium. It's been special.

But now, it's time to turn our attention back to Pawtucket.

Where We Stand

Eleven matches in, the Tide remain ninth in the Eastern Conference, sitting just outside the playoff line with 15 points from a 4W-3D-4L start. And honestly? The table doesn't tell the whole story.

Rhode Island have played fewer matches than almost everyone around them. Of the eight clubs currently above them, only one has played the same number of games. Most have already played between 12 and 14 matches. That means there are still points left on the table for RIFC to make up ground.

Momentum also feels like it's beginning to swing in Rhode Island's favor. The club enters Saturday having won two straight matches across all competitions and outscored opponents 11-3 over its last four games. JJ Williams is producing at an All-League level, Leo Afonso has become a dangerous spark off the bench, and the attack suddenly looks capable of scoring goals in bunches.

After an uneven first third of the season, things are finally trending in the Ocean State club's direction.

Who We're Facing

The challenge? It doesn't get much tougher than this. Orange County SC arrive in Pawtucket sitting atop the Western Conference with 26 points from a 7W-5D-2L record. They lead the West in victories, own a +7 goal differential, and have only lost twice all season.

The scary part is that they're getting better.

Orange County enter Saturday unbeaten in their last five regular-season matches and have scored 13 goals during that stretch. They've been arguably the league's best road sides, picking up four away victories and leading the entire USL Championship with 15 goals scored on their travels.

The attack is balanced and dangerous. Yaniv Bazini has exploded recently with three goals in his last two matches and now leads the club with five goals, while former League One Golden Boot winner Lyam MacKinnon sits right behind him with four. This is a team that can score from multiple places and punish mistakes in transition.

They're first in the West for a reason.

Rhody Randoms

  • Rhode Island FC have lost just once in 11 matches at Centreville Bank Stadium across all competitions this season (6W-1L-4D).
  • The clubs have met only once before. Orange County earned a 1-0 victory in California in September 2024, a result that became Rhode Island's final regular-season loss before its club-record nine-match unbeaten run to the USL Championship Final.

Hands on the Pulse

A quick shoutout to Matt Hands, who's been absolutely carrying the World Cup content torch at Tide Talk this summer. Since opening day, he's somehow managed to publish a daily World Cup recap, capturing every upset, controversy, tactical wrinkle, and moment of magic along the way. It's become required reading during the Summer of Soccer. If you've missed any of them, do yourself a favor and dive in.

Vibe Check

Could there be a more perfect way to cap off a month of World Cup magic than a packed Centreville Bank Stadium, a matchup against the Western Conference leaders, and fireworks waiting on the other side of the final whistle? This one feels big. Rhode Island have momentum. The attack is humming. The crowd should be outstanding. And with games in hand and the playoff race starting to tighten, every point suddenly feels massive. What's your prediction? Can the Tide keep rolling and knock off one of the league's best? Let's ride the Tide and keep the Summer of Soccer going.

Pre-Match Essentials | Rhode Island FC @ Loudoun United | Sat Jun 13, 2026 | 6 PM ET

https://preview.redd.it/wm6ovu6l0w6h1.png?width=2369&format=png&auto=webp&s=d6efb0d3210e1a0a370020554ebd85a2dd33ef90

A Chance to Build on It

The Summer of Soccer has officially arrived.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup underway across North America, the sport is about to dominate televisions, sports bars, group chats, and backyard conversations for the next month. Millions of fans from around the world have descended on the United States, Canada, and Mexico, while countless others are suddenly finding themselves looking for just a little more football between the World Cup matches.

That makes this a pretty good time for Rhode Island FC to start stacking results.

Last weekend felt like exactly what the Tide needed. After a frustrating 1-0 defeat at Indy Eleven, the Tide returned home and delivered one of their most complete performances of the season, dispatching Westchester SC 3-0 in front of a sold-out Centreville Bank Stadium. Goals from Clay Holstad, JJ Williams, and Leo Afonso highlighted an evening where Rhode Island controlled the match from the opening whistle and reminded supporters just how dangerous this squad can be when everything clicks.

Cup matches can sometimes feel disconnected from the regular-season grind, but this one felt different. The attack looked sharp, the defense never looked troubled, and for the first time in a few weeks the momentum seemed to swing back in Rhode Island's favor. Now comes the bigger challenge: carrying those good vibes into league play and finally finding some consistency away from home.

Where We Stand

Ten matches into the USL Championship season, the Tide remain 9th in the Eastern Conference, sitting just below the playoff line with 12 points from a 3W-3D-4L start. The Eastern Conference remains incredibly congested, however, with only a handful of points separating several teams in and around the playoff line.

The underlying numbers continue to paint the picture of a team that's closer than its record suggests. RIFC ranks fourth in the league with 165 shots while allowing a league-low 95 shots through ten matches, making it one of the USL Championship's strongest sides in both chance creation and defensive suppression. The challenge has simply been turning good performances into points. Last week's convincing win over Westchester won't impact the league table, but it did offer a timely reminder of this group's ceiling. A result in Virginia would send Rhode Island into the break with momentum and keep the Tide firmly in the thick of the playoff race.

Who We're Facing

Loudoun United enters the weekend 11th in the Eastern Conference with 9 points from a 1W-6D-3L record. While Loudoun sits below Rhode Island in the standings, its six draws and just three losses tell the story of a team that has been difficult to beat. The hosts have earned points in seven of their ten league matches this season, and Segra Field has been particularly frustrating for visiting teams, with Loudoun taking points from five of its six home contests despite still searching for its first home win of the campaign.

The hosts have shown flashes of being a dangerous side, ranking among the league leaders with four clean sheets while also dropping seven points from winning positions. That inconsistency has kept them near the bottom half of the table, but they're capable of making life difficult for anyone on their day. There's also the small matter of history: Rhode Island FC has never scored against Loudoun in four all-time meetings, with three scoreless draws and a 2-0 Loudoun victory accounting for the entire series. Breaking that streak would be a welcome way for the Tide to head into the summer break.

Rhody Randoms

  • JJ Williams leads the USL Championship with 37 shots this season and enters Saturday with eight goals across all competitions, already matching his 2025 goal total.
  • Rhode Island FC is the only USL Championship club to have faced fewer than 100 shots through ten league matches (95). Despite some uneven results, the defensive foundation remains one of the strongest in the league.
  • Loudoun United is winless at home in league play this season (0W-5D-1L), but has also lost just once at Segra Field. If you like tense one-goal games and late drama, this fixture has your name all over it.

Vibe Check

This one feels bigger than it might look on the schedule. A win will not suddenly turn Rhode Island into a title contender, but it would build on the positive momentum from the Westchester match, potentially lift the Tide back above the playoff line, and send the club into the June break feeling much better about where things stand. The opportunities are there. RIFC continues to generate chances, limit opponents, and show flashes of being one of the more dangerous teams in the Eastern Conference. Now it is about putting together a complete road performance and finally solving a Loudoun side that has somehow become Rhode Island's most stubborn puzzle. What are you expecting from this one? Can the Tide finally find the back of the net against Loudoun? Drop your predictions below, and let's ride the Tide and bring three points home from Virginia.

Pre-Match Essentials | Prinx Tires USL Cup | Rhode Island FC @ Westchester SC | Sat Jun 6, 2026 | 7:30 PM ET

https://preview.redd.it/uglkoefiai5h1.png?width=2369&format=png&auto=webp&s=666e77ff8a92e4b5ed5049b94c0f2dd9f70d39b2

A Chance to Reset the Narrative

Last weekend's trip to Indianapolis ended in frustration, but not necessarily disappointment. Rhode Island FC fell 1-0 to Indy Eleven despite controlling long stretches of the match, outshooting the hosts 20-7 and piling up 33 touches inside the Indy penalty area. Unfortunately, once again, Eric Dick proved to be Rhode Island's kryptonite. The Indy goalkeeper recorded six saves and improved an almost absurd record against the Tide, who have managed just a single goal against him across six meetings.

The result snapped some positive momentum, but it didn't feel like a performance that warrants panic. If anything, it reinforced a theme we've seen throughout 2026: this team is capable of creating chances against anyone. The next step is simply being more clinical in front of goal. With league play taking a brief pause, Rhode Island now shifts its focus back to the Prinx Tires USL Cup, where a visit from Westchester SC presents an opportunity to get back in the win column and keep its knockout-round hopes alive.

Where We Stand

Ten league matches into the season, the Tide sit 9th in the Eastern Conference with 12 points from a 3W-3D-4L record, just one spot below the playoff line. It's been a season of peaks and valleys so far, with Rhode Island looking capable of beating anyone on its day but still searching for the consistency that fueled last year's playoff run. The recent 4-1 win over Brooklyn showed just how dangerous this team can be when everything clicks, but losses to Portland and Indy have cooled some of that momentum.

Despite the mixed results, the underlying numbers remain encouraging. JJ Williams leads the USL Championship with 38 shots, while Leo Afonso ranks second with 34, and Rhode Island continues to create chances at one of the highest rates in the league. In the USL Cup, the Tide sit on two points through two matches, but with only two points separating first from sixth in Group 5, Saturday's result could dramatically reshape the standings heading into the final group-stage match.

Who We're Facing

Westchester SC comes into Pawtucket sitting 16th in USL League One with seven points from a 2W-1D-6L record and having lost four straight matches across all competitions. It's been a difficult start for a club still trying to find its footing, particularly away from home, where it remains winless this season and has scored just two goals while conceding 11.

The visitors do have a few players worth watching, led by former Rhode Island midfielder Conor McGlynn, who captains the side and leads the club with five goals in all competitions. Jonathan Jimenez has also contributed in attack, while goalkeeper Luca Marinelli has kept several matches close despite the results. Saturday marks Westchester's first-ever trip to Centreville Bank Stadium and, barring a surprise postseason meeting, likely the only matchup between these clubs this season, with Rhode Island looking to build on last year's 4-1 victory in New York.

Rhody Randoms

  • Rhode Island FC has never lost to Westchester SC, winning the club's only previous meeting 4-1 in New York during the 2025 USL Cup.
  • Nick Scardina's rise has been one of the quieter success stories of 2026. Tyler Hatch noted in his latest Under the Surface column that Scardina picked up his first two assists for the club in May and now looks firmly entrenched as Rhode Island's starting right back. If you haven't checked out Tyler's monthly statistical deep dive yet, it's well worth a read.

A Hands On The Pulse

One of the biggest storylines Matt Hands highlighted this week is Rhode Island's international absences, with both Jojea Kwizera (Rwanda) and Dwayne "Busy" Atkinson (Jamaica) away on national team duty. Their departures could create opportunities for players like Noah Fuson, Logan Dorsey, and Agustín "Pity" Rodríguez to take on larger roles in a match that feels tailor-made for squad rotation. For more on the lineup implications, cup scenarios, and why Matt sees this as a game Rhode Island should handle, be sure to check out his full Prematch Lookout over on Tide Talk.

Vibe Check

This feels like the perfect opportunity for Rhode Island FC to hit reset. The Indy result was frustrating, but the performance itself was far from poor, and now the Tide return home for a matchup that presents a real opportunity to build momentum heading into a busy summer stretch. With Kids Night, fireworks, and a chance to keep their USL Cup hopes alive, Centreville Bank Stadium should have plenty of energy on Saturday night. What are you expecting from this one? More squad rotation? A breakout night from Fuson? Another JJ goal? Drop your thoughts below. Let's ride the Tide and keep the USL Cup dream alive.

Pre-Match Essentials | Rhode Island FC @ Indy Eleven | Sat May 30, 2026 | 7 PM ET

https://preview.redd.it/tz6vrb2iz44h1.png?width=2369&format=png&auto=webp&s=a22015e61942a9cb9866b9890f65c8e697826805

Searching for Consistency in the Brickyard

Last weekend felt important. After a flat and frustrating loss in Portland, Rhode Island FC returned home and delivered exactly the kind of response supporters had been hoping for, rolling past Brooklyn FC 4-1 behind braces from Jojea Kwizera and JJ Williams. The scoreline hardly flattered the Tide either. Rhode Island created chances throughout the night and could have scored even more before finally breaking down a Brooklyn side led by former Tide goalkeeper Jackson Lee.

Now comes the harder part: doing it again. Saturday sends Rhode Island to Indianapolis for its first meeting of 2026 with Indy Eleven, a club that has quietly become one of the Tide's most competitive Eastern Conference opponents. With the standings as congested as ever and Indy unbeaten at home this season, this feels like the kind of match that can reveal whether last week's performance was simply a good night or the start of something more.

Where We Stand

Nine league matches into the season, the Tide sit 9th in the Eastern Conference with 12 points from a 3W-3D-3L record, just one spot below the playoff line. Rhode Island has shown flashes of being one of the more dangerous teams in the conference, but consistency has remained elusive. Last week's 4-1 win over Brooklyn served as a reminder of this group's potential when everything starts clicking in the final third.

There are reasons to believe things are trending in the right direction. Rhode Island is unbeaten in seven of its last eight USL Championship matches, while JJ Williams and Jojea Kwizera are tied for the team lead with five league goals apiece. The Brooklyn victory also marked the second time this season RIFC has scored four goals in a match. With the Eastern Conference table as crowded as ever, another three points on Saturday could move the Tide as high as fifth place.

Who We're Facing

Indy Eleven enters the weekend sitting 5th in the Eastern Conference with 15 points from a 4W-3D-2L start and are unbeaten in their last three matches across all competitions. The biggest thing to know about this group is how formidable they are at home. Indy is 4W-1D-0L at Michael A. Carroll Stadium this season and hasn't lost a home match in any competition since August 2025. All four of their league wins have come in Indianapolis, where the Eleven have scored 18 goals while conceding just seven.

They're also getting contributions from all over the field. Bruno Rendón has found his scoring touch recently and leads the club with five goals, while veteran playmaker Aodhan Quinn remains one of the league's most dangerous creators. Indy is comfortable defending deep and striking on the counter, which should present a much different challenge than the one Rhode Island faced against Brooklyn a week ago.

Hands on the Pulse

Matt Hands here at Tide Talk highlighted one of the most intriguing tactical battles heading into Saturday's match: possession. Indy enters the weekend averaging just 38.1% possession, the lowest mark in the USL Championship, and are perfectly comfortable sitting deep, staying compact, and looking to strike on the counter.

That presents an interesting challenge for Rhode Island, which has often looked its best playing vertically and winning transitions. Saturday may require the Tide to be the team dictating possession and patiently breaking down a side that would rather defend first and let opponents have the ball. For a deeper dive into that matchup and Matt's full prediction, be sure to check out The Prematch Lookout.

Rhody Randoms

  • Jojea Kwizera's second goal against Brooklyn gave him his first brace in a Rhode Island FC shirt.
  • JJ Williams, Jojea Kwizera, and Nick Scardina all earned Team of the Week honors after the Brooklyn win. It marked the first time in club history that Rhode Island FC placed three players in the league's weekly XI.

Vibe Check

The Brooklyn win felt like a breath of fresh air. The attack woke up, the confidence returned, and for the first time in a few weeks Rhode Island looked like a team capable of making a real climb up the Eastern Conference table. Now comes the challenge of backing it up. Indy is unbeaten at home this season, sitting near the top of the conference, and has quietly become one of the tougher road tests in the league.

This feels like the kind of match that can tell us a lot about where the Tide really stand. Can Rhode Island turn one great performance into momentum? Can they go into one of the league's toughest environments and come away with a result? Let us know your predictions, keys to the match, and score picks below. Let's ride the Tide and bring three points back to the Ocean State.

Pre-Match Essentials | Rhode Island FC vs Brooklyn FC | Sat May 23, 2026 | 7:30 PM ET

https://preview.redd.it/6ov33cv06w2h1.png?width=2369&format=png&auto=webp&s=146c71ce7eaf960fa667a31758733b6998f48d14

Back Home, Back Hunting Points

Rhode Island FC returns to Centreville Bank Stadium Saturday night, trying to regroup after a brutal USL Cup loss in Maine and refocus on league play against Brooklyn FC.

Last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to Portland Hearts of Pine was, frankly, a miserable night for Rhode Island. In a match that already carried extra emotion thanks to the growing New England rivalry and a strong traveling contingent of RIFC supporters who made the trip north, the club came out completely out of sync and paid for it almost immediately. Portland jumped ahead early, added a second before the half-hour mark, and Rhode Island spent the rest of the night trying to dig itself out of a hole it created with one of its sloppiest starts of the season.

There were stretches later in the match where RIFC finally looked more like itself. The attack generated pressure, Logan Dorsey pulled one back early in the second half, and the club finished with an overwhelming edge in shots, corners, and possession in the attacking third. But those flashes of urgency only made the opening stretch sting more. Rhode Island chased the game for over an hour and, despite the late push, never truly recovered from how poor the opening 30 minutes looked.

Now attention flips back to league play and a first-ever meeting with expansion side and likely future heated rival Brooklyn FC under the lights in Pawtucket. National TV. World Soccer Night. Two clubs meeting for the first time ever. Maybe this is the start of a whole new New England vs. New York soccer rivalry chapter.

Where We Stand

Eight matches into the season, Rhode Island sits 10th in the Eastern Conference with nine points from a 2W-3D-3L start, just below the playoff line and in a table tight enough that a single good week can completely shift the outlook. The Tide enter Saturday unbeaten in four of their last five league matches (2W-2D-1L), but it still feels like this group is searching for the version of itself that can consistently put complete performances together.

That’s kind of been the story lately. There have been stretches where Rhode Island looks like one of the more dangerous attacking teams in the conference. The 4-0 dismantling of Charleston. Taking points off league-leading Tampa Bay. The avalanche of chances created against Portland despite the ugly result. But there have also been lapses, slow starts, and missed opportunities that have kept the club from fully climbing the standings.

The encouraging part is that the underlying numbers continue trending in the right direction. Rhode Island generated 18 shots, 25 crosses, and 10 corners against Portland last weekend, continuing a trend of creating a ton of attacking pressure even if the finishing touch hasn’t always followed. JJ Williams continues to lead the attack with five goals across all competitions, while Logan Dorsey is coming off one of his more active performances of the year after scoring in Maine.

The sense around this team right now is less panic and more frustration that there’s probably a higher ceiling here than the standings currently show. Saturday feels like one of those opportunities to reset the mood a little heading into the summer stretch.

Who We’re Facing

They come into Pawtucket sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference with seven points from a 2W-1D-6L start and are currently winless in their last four matches across all competitions. Brooklyn has struggled to find consistency during its inaugural USL Championship campaign, particularly away from home, where they’re still searching for their first result of the season.

The biggest issue has been goals. Brooklyn hasn’t scored in nearly 200 minutes and was shut out again midweek in a 2-0 USL Cup loss to Hartford Athletic. That said, the scoreline probably flattered Hartford a little. Brooklyn actually outshot Hartford 15-4 and forced several big saves, so there are signs this team may be a little more dangerous than recent results suggest.

There’s also a pretty notable Rhode Island connection running through this roster. Saturday marks the return of former RIFC players Jackson Lee, Gabriel Alves, and Taimu Okiyoshi to Centreville Bank Stadium. Lee especially feels likely to get a warm reception after spending the first two years of his professional career in Rhode Island.

And while Brooklyn has struggled overall, there’s still legitimate attacking talent here. Markus Anderson leads the club with four goals, while Juan Carlos Obregón Jr. arrived after winning the 2025 USL League One Golden Boot with 17 goals last season. If Rhode Island gets careless defensively, Brooklyn still has enough quality to punish them.

Rhody Randoms

  • Saturday marks the first-ever meeting between Rhode Island FC and Brooklyn FC in any competition.
  • Brooklyn is still searching for its first road result of the season (0W-3L-0D away).
  • Former Tide players Jackson Lee, Gabriel Alves, and Taimu Okiyoshi all return to Pawtucket as opponents for the first time.
  • Rhode Island is unbeaten all-time against New York-based clubs after last season’s 4-1 win over Westchester SC.

Vibe Check

This feels like a really important “keep the pressure on” kind of match. The Eastern Conference table is crowded, the atmosphere at Centreville Bank Stadium has been building every week, and this Rhode Island team still feels like one that’s close to putting everything together. The attack is generating chances, the identity is starting to sharpen, and now it’s about turning good stretches into complete performances. Add in a first-ever meeting with Brooklyn, national TV, and a Saturday night crowd in Pawtucket, and this one suddenly has a little extra juice to it. Curious how everyone’s feeling heading into this one. Who gets on the scoresheet? Do we finally get the full 90-minute breakout attacking performance? Let’s ride the Tide and make Centreville Bank Stadium loud tonight.

Star Wars Night in Pawtucket: RIFC Hosts Birmingham Legion FC

A cold, rainy night in Hartford. A scoreless draw that honestly had no business going to penalties. And then Koke Vegas, being Koke Vegas, making the save that mattered most before Karifa Yao stepped up and buried it. That's kind of the Rhode Island FC story right now: a club that keeps finding a way. The Tide came away from Trinity Health Stadium with an extra point in the Prinx Tires USL Cup, adding yet another chapter to an increasingly compelling 2026 run of form. The vibe feels different. This team is clicking.

Now the Tide gets to come home. And not just for any home game. Saturday night at Centreville Bank Stadium is Star Wars Night, the first in club history, and Rhode Island FC will be looking to do what it hasn't done since October 2024: win three league games in a row. Everything is trending in the right direction. The attack is cooking, the backline has gone quiet in all the best ways, and the fanbase is locked in. Time to kick it into hyperspeed and put on a show.

Where We Stand

Six matches in, the Tide sit 9th in the East, right on the playoff bubble, with eight points from a 2W-2D-2L start. That record still has the asterisk of a rough opening month, going 0-2-2 through the first four games, but what's happened since is what matters. Back-to-back league wins, a dramatic shootout victory in Hartford, and seven goals across the last two Championship matches. Call it what you want, the points are piling up. The momentum pendulum has swung hard, and it's swinging RIFC's way.

The attack has fully come alive. JJ Williams leads the club with four goals across all competitions and is picking up steam. Jojea Kwizera has already matched his career-high goal total for the club just six games into the regular season. And the defense has matched them step for step. Grant Stoneman barely puts a foot wrong. Karifa Yao beyond being a clearance machine is also now ice cold from the spot. And Koke Vegas is playing some of the best soccer of his career in goal, sitting just 11 minutes shy of 10,000 career regular-season minutes in the Championship. Rhode Island FC isn't searching for itself anymore. It's found it.

Who We're Facing

Birmingham Legion FC come in 11th in the East with six points from a 1W-3D-2L record. Still, it’s the USL, you can’t sleep on anyone. The Legion have quietly put together a four-game unbeaten run across all competitions and are trending upward. They picked up their first win of the season in genuinely impressive fashion, shutting out defending USL Championship title-holders Pittsburgh Riverhounds at home on April 12. They followed that up with a 2-2 draw against Indy, then held San Antonio scoreless before falling on penalties in their USL Cup opener. They're gaining confidence.

The main threat is Tyler Pasher, who has been an absolute nuisance lately. Pasher already has three goals in his last three games, surpassing his entire 2025 scoring total in just six matches. He also leads the team with 12 chances created, so if he has a good night, Birmingham can be dangerous. That said, the Legion come to Pawtucket carrying some unwanted history. They are winless in all five previous meetings with RIFC (0W-4L-1T). Saturday gives them the chance to rewrite that, but they'll have to do it against a club playing its best soccer of the season.

  • Under the Surface - Tyler Hatch's April breakdown is also live and it is packed. Did you know Grant Stoneman increased his defensive actions per 90 by 230% after moving into a rotation role? Neither did we.

First ever Star Wars Night, lightsabers for the first 2,000 through the gate, a team that has completely flipped the script on its early season struggles to looking genuinely dangerous. This is exactly the kind of home match you circle. Birmingham has never beaten us in Rhode Island, and this is the hottest we have looked all season. Han shot first and so will the Tide. The Force is strong with this club right now, and Centreville Bank Stadium on a Saturday night under the lights should be electric. Drop your predictions below, tell us who starts, whether JJ picks up where he left off, and if this team can pull off three straight league wins. Let's ride the Tide and remind everyone why coming to Pawtucket is a bad idea.
